op you're new here but you're about to find out Papi's Angels do not f*** around

  • May 5, 2023

    Nah bro he is HIM

  • May 5, 2023

In 2023 the reference tracks exist as ammo to discredit him. No one who says this disqualifies him from all-timer conversations respected his music enough to ever consider him in those conversations either way.

    Everyone knows he can write.

I like Drake, and I don’t think the answer to my question is yes

  • May 5, 2023

he’s done so much it doesn’t matter imo drake’s proved his pen is so strong if him not writing 10 bands tarnishes his legacy idk what to tell you

    The reference track themselves don't

But the narrative behind them 100% has. Way more than the adidon diss stuff too.

The reference tracks simply were the result of Drake and QM cooking up together and everyone including QM has said this.

Simply put, the (false) notion that he doesn't write his own s*** is absolutely a stain on his legacy IMO, even if in the grand scheme of things what transpired was not really that big of a deal. Drake's success is such that it probably doesn't impact the bottomline, but in "barbershop twitter culture"

Thing is though, it depends on how you weigh things because no truly in the real world outside of Twitter and Rap message boards cares or even believes that Drake has a "ghostwriter" and doesn't write most of his s***.

It’s definitely followed him around since, cause some ppl still think drake doesn’t write at all and are very vocal about it. But I feel as though it still hasn’t affected his overall legacy much

Adidon one could’ve but he and Adonis seem to have a nice relationship which kinda buries the pusha stuff

And how does it make you feel hearing them now vs back then?

    https://youtu.be/Df2f00DBrOQ - know yourself

There is actually 4 references that “leaked” but I think this will always plague his career to people that don’t understand music to its full extent

I mean it's followed him around since, sure...online

But none of the people who actually dictate culture, and that dictate Hip-Hop commentary, actually believe that drake's pen is not valid so from that perspective, idk how much his legacy is impacted honestly.

He penned a grammy nominated smash as a response to it lol

Honestly the thing that rubs me the wrong way about this is that these weren't reference records

Per QM, he didn't know what a reference track was, was sending records to 1da, and randomly heard drake tracking 10 bands and that's how the relationship started.

Nevertheless, Drake undisputedly has an all time pen and I think 7 years later, the whole thing about him and ghostwriting is silly. At the end of the day, I don't think anyone truly believes he don't write his s*** and if he's guilty of not writing ALL of his lyrics then so is literally every other rapper in this s***.

Definitely did irreversible damage to his career and legacy no doubt about it. That and Adidon. But he still makes good music so i don’t care that much

  • May 5, 2023

Listen man, we're just happy he made a classic album no matter how much help it took. Rest of them s***s are tough to sit through

  • May 5, 2023

Although the reference tracks did in a way put a chink in his armor (agreed with the other user more-so than TSOA) I’d argue it also helped solidify his stature by virtue of going toe to toe with a battle rapper and winning decidedly. It could be argued that the pen questions haunt him more than winning a real rap beef, but I choose to take the latter. It’s all part of his story and more than likely those who hold it against him weren’t rooting for him in the first place

Drake writes for other artists & has given away songs so it’s just funny looking back on it now bc all he’s done is get bigger & better imo

If it would have affected his legacy I think we would have seen it in sales & in his following

If anything it complements his legacy & proves just how much he can withstand. He still breaks records & rules as the current king of hip hop. He’s been tested & still standing

    I mean what a goat

This is the stuff of legend
