Idk what this tweet means by hostile but I feel like this role has inspired a subgenre of dark haired white male, loner protagionists who usually has suffered trauma to make them more sympathetic eg Joe Goldberg. Never watched Taxi Driver so he might be the OG but Nightcrawler started a trend

So you mean basically the whole sigma current or another archetype of protagonist? Because if yes, that started before Nightcrawler -see Bateman, Durden, etc.-
I think the tweet has a point but the reasoning is childish, immature and trails off into nonsense.
I definitely agree about the problematic protagonist or the antagonist but I think it's more about highlighting the complexity of the human experience. Also a main character is only interesting if he or she has a major character flaw. It's basic dramatic storytelling.

Bateman another good one I don't think it was the first, but Nightcrawler's praise and what Jake brought to the role has inspired others to have this kind of protagionist. I swear there were more that gave me Nightcrawler vibes while I was watching but Joe Goldberg the only one that comes to mind right now
Im driving rn
Lets collect some @Kr0niic
Darryl walking dead is the reason for this

hmm Lou imo is unique compared to most protagonist maybe indirectly
seeing how everyone’s scrambling to find a decent example I’d say this take is wrong
An anti-hero? Tony Soprano was an a*******
Yup. Mfs talking about "twitter generation" when david chase wrote Tony Soprano in the 90s.
Thread title instantly made me think of Eren from Attack on Titan
Immediately thought of him and Black swordsman/Lost children era Guts.
Miu isn't an edgy protagonist
she wears tracksuits everywhere & barely talks & is a witch love her though
