Bout to leave for the theater
this was absolute cinema, this is exactly what a blockbuster film is supposed to feel like. holy f***
Some background:
I’ve been a Superman fan practically since I was a baby. One of the first movies I remember seeing at home was the Donner film (and II). The first live action TV show I got into was Smallville when I was like 8. I would put on Cartoon Network every time I’d see Justice League on the guide. I’ve related heavily to past portrayals of Superman because of what the character stands for along with being someone who lost their father at a young age. So there is some bias towards the character and the movie itself in my thoughts.
Superman may be the perfect representation of a comic book movie. It’s not afraid of being a comic book movie. It embraces the fact that it is based on a comic book. I feel, for me, that it is amongst the greatest comic book movies of all time.
This film is what I always imagined what a live action DCAU would look like. It really does feel like an episode of Superman: The Animated Series or Justice League Unlimited in the absolute best way. While watching this I was easily able to picture what was happening on screen in Bruce Timm’s style. I was grinning from ear to ear for the entire runtime.
Superman at its core is about humanity. What it means to be human. David Corenswet may be the best all around interpretation of Superman. From the physicality, to how he talks, how he saves people. He is Superman.
I go on for much longer on Letterboxd but to sum the rest up:
Superman does for Superman what The Batman did for Batman. Bring a definitive portrayal of an iconic hero to the screen. A portrayal that is faithful to every fiber of the character over the last 80 or so years. I truly believe with this film, James Gunn has cemented himself as the best comic book filmmaker of all time. All hits, no misses. I am very excited to see where The DC Universe goes from here, especially where we see Superman next.

Superman is a Jewish satire of the German Ubermensch
And he’s not an immigrant as much as he is an orphan like Moses.
