F*** yeah! This is Justice League Unlimited bought to life
And gotta appreciate Gunns approach to obscure, lesser known characters as well.
Nathan Fillion as Guy is just way too perfect and he better be in the Lanterns show.
And we’re absolutely gonna need more of Mr. Terrific. A lot of people said this was gonna be overstuffed with too many heroes in the movie and doesn’t feel like it all. And the pacing was great.
Some background:
I’ve been a Superman fan practically since I was a baby. One of the first movies I remember seeing at home was the Donner film (and II). The first live action TV show I got into was Smallville when I was like 8. I would put on Cartoon Network every time I’d see Justice League on the guide. I’ve related heavily to past portrayals of Superman because of what the character stands for along with being someone who lost their father at a young age. So there is some bias towards the character and the movie itself in my thoughts.
Superman may be the perfect representation of a comic book movie. It’s not afraid of being a comic book movie. It embraces the fact that it is based on a comic book. I feel, for me, that it is amongst the greatest comic book movies of all time.
This film is what I always imagined what a live action DCAU would look like. It really does feel like an episode of Superman: The Animated Series or Justice League Unlimited in the absolute best way. While watching this I was easily able to picture what was happening on screen in Bruce Timm’s style. I was grinning from ear to ear for the entire runtime.
Superman at its core is about humanity. What it means to be human. David Corenswet may be the best all around interpretation of Superman. From the physicality, to how he talks, how he saves people. He is Superman.
I go on for much longer on Letterboxd but to sum the rest up:
Superman does for Superman what The Batman did for Batman. Bring a definitive portrayal of an iconic hero to the screen. A portrayal that is faithful to every fiber of the character over the last 80 or so years. I truly believe with this film, James Gunn has cemented himself as the best comic book filmmaker of all time. All hits, no misses. I am very excited to see where The DC Universe goes from here, especially where we see Superman next.
5 out of 5
this review has me so hype man. excited to provide my thoughts on Friday!
Was there a scene at the end of the credits? I left the theater early.
Yes but nothing important
You can def tell where the Day 1 Day 2 etc were supposed to be.
Easily, but I think noting the structure might’ve been kind of distracting? Idk

They didn't use the angle from the trailer where Clark says "Ms. Lane." Was a miss imo, it showed him changing in to Superman perfectly.
BTW I was at the early screening at AMC 34th Street in NYC and I was shocked by the lack of "extras" within the theatre (merch, decoration, etc), especially considering the amount of marketing around this film
while i love superman and im so here for his portrayal in this film
how Mr.Terrific was portrayed legit brought tears to my eyes man. having a cool ass black super hero was f***ing amazing to experience. idc what people say, idc how niggas feel, representation will always matter
thank you Gunn
BTW, this isn't a spoiler but as an Italian, I noticed this
The scene where they were letting that one particular thing out of the cage - the side of the truck said VICENZO'S
Its supposed to be VINCENZO's with another N
Okay, that's it - I needed to say this, lol
Same for my theater
same here
