KTT stay hating on Ari Aster, but i enjoyed Hereditary & Midsommar more than 90% of the horror films this decade
One thing i noticed with Aster is that most people hating on him don’t even elaborate on why he is supposed to suck
Both of his films are great on a technical level, have good performances from the cast and actually had some very effective scares, which i can’t say about most other horror films
I loved the beginning of Midsommar because it subverted the "evil antagonist" horror cliché by using a cult with different cultural values, but then halfway through the cult just became more and more cliché evil, just doing gross and inhuman things "because" which was very disappointing to me. Strong filmmaking overall, but yeah. I thought Johnsons was overall better and more frightening because it remained in the realm of the plausible
dusty b**** back to steal a spot at the oscars
@FlyHiii lmao why didn't I follow u on lb yet? for some reason I was sure I already did
You got a link?
I’m intrigued about watching short film of this but feel like it might spoil the feature length

I just can't stop myself from typing "Eggers better" whenever I see some Aster praise he's not bad but there can be only one

They're pretty much the same for me they both have made 2 great horror folk films, it's just that Eggers is more experimental and Aster his films come across as a lot more mainstream friendly
I enjoyed everything they have put out so far
The VVitch is my fav film out of both their feature lengths tho
ouuuu
I think he’s one of the most overrated filmmakers currently working but I’m totally looking forward to this. Hereditary and especially Midsommar grew on me. I used to view his work as self serious trite that highlighted a contempt for the genre he was working within. I’d say the same for Eggers but he actually knocks that sort of thing out of the park so well that it’s hard to hate on what’s he’s doing. Aster on the other hand is a bit more clumsy. Midsommar grew on me when I fully realized just how campy and indulgent it is. It wasn’t the “elevated horror” nonsense that I had originally got out of it the first time.
Ok so there’s a scene where one or two teen girls try to pressure Joaquin’s character into smoking weed

He’s very schlocky, when you separate toni collete decapitating herself from the ”uhhh its actually about grief” discourse it becomes a lot more fun

I cant speak on Midsommar, but I think Hereditary deserves all the praise it gets. Aster genuinely finds pretty unique/distinct ways to make his scares effective and it is absolutely a 2010s classic imo. I'd say Eggers by comparison is actually more overrated though I do enjoy his films.

I think Hereditary is pretty standard 70’s slow burn stuff. There’s nothing really new going on there. It’s bascially just Roeg’s Don’t Look Now and Altman’s Images. I got the sense at the time Aster had only seen like 5 classic horror films and tried to replicate their tone and aesthetic without actually having a concrete grasp on the genre. Him having a bit more fun with the campier indulgent genre elements of Midsommar made me appreciate him more. The Texas Chainsaw nods in there were neat. Eggers just does the “art horror” stuff much better in my opinion. The Witch is one of the few A24 films of its kind that I think earns it’s sense of self importance.

I definitely don’t think Eggers is milesssss better like everyone says. I’d argue that I like Midsommar/Hereditary more than The Witch
