1st drop: REBELS info
Alternate History Shopped Cover made by a fan.
Here's a question for you. If you are a music genius and you can play everything in the studio, what do you do if you have a touring band? Do you let them play specific parts to keep them a little motivated to stay in the studio? Do you ignore them? Do you keep making excuses?
Prince's idea was simple in 1979. He went to Colorado to record and during this 12 day short stay there he recorded with his band. Truth be told, Prince was likely done with his next record and this was just a vacation for him.
The Rebels was planned to be a rock oriented project. The album cover was allegedly going to be silhouettes. A few were written by Prince, a couple written by Dez and 1 was written by Andre.
I think Prince understood early in his career it was going to confuse his fanbase to be in a group all of a sudden.
These demos surfaced sometime a while back in time and this is that whole session from Colorado.
Too Long (written by Dez)
Disco Away (Written by Dez)
Thrill You Or Kill You (Written by Andre)
You
If I Love You Tonight
The Loser
Hard To Get
untitled instrumental by Dez D***erson
untitled instrumental by André Cymone
Dez D***erson – guitar, lead vocals on Too Long and Disco Away
Andre Cymone – bass, lead vocals on Thrill You Or Kill You and co-lead vocals on Hard To Get
Gayle Chapman – keyboards, lead vocals on You, If I Love You Tonight and The Loser
Matt Fink - keyboards
Bobby Z. – drums
Prince – all other instruments, co-lead vocals on Hard To Get
Other performance details unknown
Interestingly not really Prince on lead vocals. Which leads me to think he didn't want to seem like he was taking the spotlight from a band project.
This is the first selection of many many this month. Stay tuned and if you are new to my threads, then you should ask to be added if you are interested in the next. A LOOOOOOT of stuff this month, fam. I hope you find something you like.
In Progress -
Sample choice :
The Psyche of Prince & Morris Day was created in a musical partnership called 'The Time' STILL TO THIS DAY people think the Time was a band on record and they will say "I love Prince but The Time was my s***" Not realizing that The Time was Prince performing/writing/arranging/producing the majority of the music in the studio on the first 3 lp's.
Where it started was a melding of two band's 'Enterprise' & 'Flyte Time' which would Jam & Lewis's production company name a few years later.
Originally the singer was going to be Alexander O'Neal. Jimmy Jam and Lewis would later take him & make him into an R&B superstar.
When Prince blueprinted The Time he had the brainchild idea to be an imaginary producer by the name of 'Jamie Starr' inspired by a movie he had watched recently called 'Idol Maker' based on the life of a producer who worked for teen pop star 'Fabian'
The arsenal of the Time made them distinctly their own monster on the music scene. One tool that Prince utilized with them right away was using Oberheim synthesizers & other a***og synths that anchored their unique sound.
in a sense, prince basically soldered together a group out of people
Prince & Morris had the idea of creating a street wise player in a MPLS sound. The synths they would use and their approach to writing is what set them apart from the music scene of the 80's. Prince would make sure to give The Time a unique sound for Morris and the stylish touches of the suits and mannerisms is also what made them memorable.
There are of course Prince-isms on these records where only he would do this. 777-9311 with the Linn Drum beat. Most people don't know this but this is an actual preset drum beat from the Linn Drum machine company created by Tower of Power David Garibaldi. Prince was a big Tower of Power fan. But he didn't want people to know where it was from on the record.
There are many things we could discuss- Prince's bass playing, his rhythm guitar work, his choice of keyboards. His shadowing background harmonies with Morris on the first 3 lp's, the great guitar solos, the funky bass playing, the interesting percussion choices on tracks like Cool - which are soda bottles with different levels of water being hit by pencils in time to the music.
The humor is present as well all through out the catalog with various sketches and characters dropping in and out.
While the music could be described as primarily MPLS Funk there are R&B-Soul,New Wave,Rock,Pop influences heard through this very very small catalog of work as a group.
There is only one album without Prince involvement and that's Condensate.
There are many anthems to enjoy. IN this particular drop you get a lot of work bundled together. You naturally get the group albums but you also GET ......the unreleased 'Corporate World' Original 7 The Time studio reunion from 2011 (also not on streaming) 5 live tour shows, plus a compilation of non album material from collaborations from other records.
In addition to that I threw in the Morris Day solo lp's as well. A lot of stuff to choose if you have some of this. I made sure we cover the. Just look at everything
