Most of the debut lp is written by prince except River Runs Dry by Bobby Z.

The psyche of Prince is a vast and imaginative one. In fact, most people have no clue about a looooot of records basically that are Prince vehicles. Now, a lot of critics miss these lp's because they are out of print and you have to do a little bit of jumping around. I forgive you.

When The Time dissolved Prince was angry that Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis had betrayed him. He felt loyalty was breached and he left that group in the ditch. Only 3 members would be in the group. Jellybean Johnson, Jerome Benton & the replacement keyboardist.

But he saw something in the new keyboardist for the Time who was extremely talented. He said to him, "I'm starting a new group and you are going to be the singer" It was just like that this group was born.

Paul Peterson was from a talented family from MPLS & Prince knew something about this family. He was recruited likely for the Time because he could learn the material extremely quickly and he was a very impressive performer-musician & he had the look. That's something that most people don't pay attention to. If you are a musician who looks like a bum, it's going to be hard for you in Pop Music.

The Family was created out of several new people but the singers would be white. The background vocalist was Wendy's sister -Susannah. (She would almost marry Prince!) It was Prince's way of showcasing his funky psychedelic pop side. What's interesting about it is once again NO ONE arranges/produces/or plays an instrument on the record but Prince. EXCEPT for 2 people. These 2 people being -

Eric Leeds was the brother of tour manager Alan Leeds. He suggested to Prince he would be an excellent addition to the band as a saxophonist. Eric wasn't a fan of Prince just like Alan. In fact he was kinda a jazz snob. This is something people need to understand who doubt Prince. If you saw a poster, you might think this guy could be less talented & too good to be true. Leeds found out instantly that Prince was magical & it was like his kindred musical brother from another mother. Leeds would create way too tracks with Prince in collaboration. He was like one of the only musicians in the room who could take the wrath of the demand of Prince.

Clare Fischer was a LEGEND already arranging strings for so much in black music and a genius musician. One of the great's, prolific composer on piano/keyboards & just one of the best you could ever get in the business. For Prince to get him? It shows you he was thinking ahead WAYYYY ahead on what his evolution of music would be. He understood he wanted orchestral strings and Clare could provide them endlessly.

What do I mean when I say the wrath of Prince? 7 day rehearsals .........many hours a day. Prince wouldn't let you leave for very long, you had a pager. You could go back at any hour to the studio- and you did. When you signed up, that's what you signed up. and that's why he will be talked about on so many levels. As a dancer, singer, songwriter, entertainer, musician, producer, arranger, conceptualist & a visionary. Pardon that interruption & now back to our program.

The mixture of songs is impressively eclectic. The instrumentation of keyboards, synths, piano, bass, guitars, horns, percussion, sound eft, strings, its an infectious mix. You can listen to the demos that I have supplied as well to see the real genius of Prince's vocal harmonies/ad-libs and dynamic vocals that are dimensional. And of course, it includes the standard 'Nothing Compares 2 U' There are so many quirky nuances on this album. You get to hear Prince & Leeds go off & explore more of the brassy jazz side that Prince always wanted to delve into.

The Family broke up little over a year and Prince moved on. The funny thing about the Family, The Time, these groups could tour FOREVER off music that Prince composed mainly on his own! He created literally competition of himself & then walked away from it. Eventually The Time & The Family wanted to reunite after the demise of Paisley Park. Prince wouldn't let them use the name. Because without him, he felt a certain way. So these groups had to rename themselves.

This particular drop you get a lot for your money. You get 2 bootlegs, live Family reunion lp from Bandcamp, plus you get Family reunion projects as well.

The album has a flex filled with shade of everyone that left Prince in the funk brass stab anthem 'Mutiny' Which was a staple of his live shows for many years. Leeds is kinda Maceo-esque on this one with Prince.

As with any Prince project, you can hear him shadowing vocally all over the place in the harmonies. He's kinda like a guiding angel as if he is saying "Don't mess up my s***"

The beautiful psyche strings of Screams of Passion, Prince in high gear with the MPLS sound. Even on a dance number like this he adds these odd little layers of synths to the linn drum sound.

This lp pulsates with a vibrant sense of life & plenty to explore & is a welcome addition to any Prince scholar in the Paisley universe.

And in some ways it hints of what is to come with Eric Leeds. But that's for another drop SOOOOOOON.

Lots of brilliance to discover for any listener. And what a damn shame a lot of Prince fans STILL don't know about this lp because it will make a hell of a deluxe.

    The Family consisted of:

    St. Paul - Vocals, Keyboards
    Susannah Melvoin - Vocals
    Jellybean Johnson - Drums
    Eric Leeds - Saxophone, flute
    Jerome Benton - percussion

    Additional Band Members:
Miko Weaver - Guitar, Background vocals
    Allen Flowers - Bass
    Jonathan Melvoin - Keyboards
    Bill Carrothers - Keyboards
    Wally Safford - Background vocals
    Greg Brooks - Background vocals

Crazy that Jellybean Johnson would be the drummer for The Time & The Family.

Both groups wouldn’t be able to tour under their name

if you left him he wanted you to know he created your musical identity & a cease and desist was that way he communicated that message 😳

it’s strange how almost all of paisley park catalog is deleted still except sheila E - it’s strange like Warners still has spite for this label. Vanity 6? You still want this deleted, why? 😒

    Eric Leeds - Times Squared
1991 rehearsals (Prince has no involvement in this live rehearsal session, he only composed the previous music)

(The streaming includes all tracks together as one file and you can just hit play and turn off your phone or whatever) Everything is in order fyi.

    Brief History -

Prince decided in the mid 80's to get more involved in forays of jazz and other musical boundaries that were challenging to him.
Around this time Prince met a saxophonist named Eric Leeds at a suggestion of his manager who was also Eric's brother.

Prince gave him a tape and said "Just listen to it and come back when you're ready" And Eric said to him that he was ready now. And right at that moment they recorded their first track together.

And then Prince put him in a band he was putting together. This was test 2. Could this man play well on stage as well with others? And The Family was born, you can listen to the stream or dl at the first page.

After The Family, Prince realized he needed to record with Eric more. He forms a band with Levi, Sheila E and this would become a transformative period for Prince because these sessions would lead to this moment. (I've also uploaded sessions from this recording from the last drop which you can find as well on page 5 but I will be updating it to include it at the main page)

Shortly after Prince is in the studio for a few days and he starts cutting these instrumental tracks and summoning Eric. One after the other and Eric has to drive in to the studio back and forth. Prince was so fast that Eric would be heading home and another track would be completed on the drive home and he would get a pager beep to return to the studio because this session needed to be completed. The '8' lp was completed in 3 days! Mostly Prince and Eric together.

8 is a interesting turn for Prince, it's a album with no titles just numbers. (Coincidentally) there's a lot of piano & synths, alto sax, little flute, live drums, electric bass and Prince grooving in the studio like only he can. Some of this drum work is ridiculous the fact he did this with multitrack method, one track after the other on the same damn day? That's amazing. It would be constant grooves after the other.

Personally I think 8 is underrated. There's a lot to listen to for instrumentation and nuances, sound design. I think it influenced a lot of musicians to think differently when they heard it as well.

There are little interesting touches like a collage of prank phone calls cut up and you can hear Prince in different voices say things like "Hi mom this is Jimbo"

Prince understood one thing clearly. Anything he was to do that was of jazz oriented material was going to be judged harshly because it would be a field day for writers to slam him for his arrogance that he thought he could do jazz.

He told Eric that this project was not going to have his name on it and he would create a fictious group surrounding the project to distract anyone thinking it was him. Eric would have to lie to the press or his friends if anyone asked.

Warner Brothers wasn't really too keen on promoting an anonymous project of new Prince music. But this was Prince, you couldn't tell him that.

Madhouse would release one single from the first album and it would do okay. The album however did not do well because it was an imaginary group.

Another album would follow a year later titled 16. 16 was more of a electronic-laden affair than the previous project. Prince would delve more into samples and make interesting musical collages with them. There's one song where a sample of a dog is barking through the whole rhythm. Even more than Atomic Dog or Who let the dogs out.

Then Prince would record 24 and not release it. Instead telling Eric to create a solo project and you do what you want with the music. It was Prince's way of repaying him for the constant work schedule of touring and recording/rehearsing.

this would be it for officially released Madhouse projects. BUT Prince would continue with Madhouse for several years before putting it to rest. He had 2 scheduled releases as well.

Madhouse 24 1993 is different because it's the first time the Madhouse project is more band driven in the studio than just Prince and Eric Leeds. Also the guitar is brought in and Prince doesn't play guitar at all on the project! it's Levi Seacer Jr! Prince mainly sticks to keyboards/synths for his role on the 24 1993 version.

Looking back there is a lot to like & enjoy as a Prince fan if you like Instrumental music and saxophone. If you don't like sax driven music, you may have an issue with this particular project.

Hopefully some of you will explore this side and hopefully one day we will hear more from this period of Eric and Prince

    If you never heard #8

If you want to read more about Madhouse, Eric has spoken on it in depth over the years.

    jazztimes.com/features/profiles/the-story-of-prince-and-madhouse-8

    ultimateprince.com/eric-leeds-times-squared

A good way to describe Madhouse is a jazz-funk group merged with Art of Noise.

    Madhouse were:

    Prince - Drums, bass, Keyboards
Eric Leeds - (Baritone) Sax, flute
Dr. Fink - Keyboards in live setting
Levi Seacer, Jr. - Bass in live setting
Dale Alexander - Drums in live setting
John Lewis - credited for drums on 16, but does not appear

    Additional Band Members:
Sheila E. - Drums (on two songs on 16)
Levi Seacer, Jr. - Bass (on two songs on 16)
    Michael B. - Drums (1994 incarnation)
    Sonny T. - Bass (1994 incarnation)
Levi Seacer, Jr. - Guitar (1994 incarnation)

Madhouse Imaginary band that played only in fantasy. were:

    bassist Bill Lewis,

    Eric Leeds -Saxes-Flutes

I made sure to include the Eric Leeds solo lp Times Squared because that's mostly Prince on all instruments and writing.

But it's Eric's version of how he sees Madhouse.

Anyways this drop is 4 hours 33 minutes. Maybe what I will do sometime soon is a Prince instrumentals drop of all the lone orphan Prince instrumentals.
