Not all movies need to have an award winning story

    Just saw your letterboxd rating

Such an overhyped movie on KTT. Doesn't surprise me though.

Had 3 really stand out scenes and that's really all. It didn't do anything else that makes it great or puts it up there with top Sci-fi movies.

It's not an engaging film on repeated views tho once the technical aspects starts to wear off on you, it's just a whole bunch of melodramatic nonsense disguising itself as "factual" but ends feeling exaggerated and hollow more than anything. It's however a great achievement in film and a highlight in Cuarón's career I'm not taking that from him, he's one of the coldest creators living today love that man

S***, can say the same s*** with Dunkirk now that I think about it

I can rewatch a movie based on the cinematography alone, but that's just me. I can see why you wouldn't want to do it tho.

I'd definitely put in the same category as Dunkrik too, where the technical achievement overshadows the story.

A lot of films I'll rewatch for the visuals alone it's just that with Gravity it did nothing for me

I do however see myself coming around to Dunkirk, I never really had strong opinions on it to begin with

Gravity completely fell apart rewatching outside the theater

Dunkirk was still great because it is still emotionally a strong film and very well edited and beautiful to look at. Gravity is so reliant on sound design and visuals and that really falls apart when you realize the story is blander than most marvel movies.

Ad Astra should still be great as well considering the movie is far more story centered than the others

nah i think it’s only getting a 4k physical release

it's weird because the ad for the movie on the main store screen says 4k hdr then you click on it and on the movie's actual page it says HD and doesnt mention 4k anymore

interesting movie. didn't go anywhere tho. The movie's plot was half assed but what you can learn from yourself and from human behavior is something to take home from this movie. Here are some side notes:

thought it was funny when roy called the captain scared...like why are you even on the mission if you're going to be a p**** ass b****

The cgi when roy travels to the lima ship and gets hit by the surges was terrible but the rest of the visuals were good...not great!

The pace was slow but not painful

It bothers me that this movie has grown on me. I just think it captures something about existential sci-fi that got lost over the years, the distance and emptiness of space and how it represents how meaningless our lives can feel sometimes and what we're chasing after. especially once he gets to that planet I won't spoil which happens to be my favorite planet since childhood and I never understood why there was so little love for it in films. Anyway. I think the CGI could have been better or maybe they should have relied on more real props. There's a lot implied and it expects the viewer to already be familiar with the most familiar sci-fi tropes because it's paying homage or maybe it's even mocking some sci-fi classics. It's like all the boring parts of Sunshine, Moon, any of the Planet of the Apes movies, Gattaca, Gravity, The Martian, Alien, Solaris and Total Recall combined into one and I'm actually okay with that. I actually wish it was longer in some places. I'm rambling now. It's a great movie. I did @RASIE dirty sry

  • This is a film I wish I would have saw in theaters, preferably an IMAX format. Was thinking of seeing it but ended up dubbing it after hearing some reviews (shout out Double Toasted tho).

The levels that the visuals go to are gorgeous; the production's blend of a***og technology, certain 70's looks and far future ideas create a world that feels within reach yet distinctly sci-fi. Pitt's character goes through this odyssey through a space of many angles - a bleak trip in an unforgiving mass of outer space, fighting back against mankind's extension of itself.

I enjoyed the emotional battleground Pitt's character had to cross at each violent encounter in a number of ways - a measured, industrialized response to the classic cliché of space madness, living up to his and his father's reputation, following orders, dealing with traumas, etc., etc.…
