Personally in my family to communicate with our ancestors we use impempho(African sage) it's not the same as the regular sage everyone uses.

In your home you have to a place to communicate with them(umsamo) or else it won't work(a room or a corner where you have a shrine of your late family's belongings, not alot can be just pictures or a single item of clothing etc.)
At umsamo that's where you burn the sage and light candles and speak to your ancestors, with African sage you have to inhale it, it puts you in a trance like state or calms you down (it's not d****).
You can talk about anything that you want but you usually go to give thanks or if you confirmation of weird s*** that's going in your life that might have to do with them(curse etc).

They respond in dreams or pass the message to a sangoma to pass to you.

My personal experience that I witnessed that made believe 100% in my spirituality was when my uncle passed away, my entire close family had similar dreams of him around the same period of time after his passing, we all dreamt of him in a river somewhere holding a child, then a sangoma confirmed that he had a child that was alive that we had to find and welcome to our family. We eventually found our nephew he was 13 but he's 18 now.

Another person experience was my sister being chosen to be our family's sangoma.
This happened 2 years ago, she was in grade 9 and alot f***ed up s*** was happening to her, she was almost in an accident, she was mugged 3 times in 2 months. She got extremely with an illness we didn't know and that's when we reached out to a sangoma to find out that she was chosen and must accept her gift and get into training

It sounds ridiculous but trust me this s*** is real and not to be played with. It's multilayered and multifaceted, so many chains involved omg that's why I want to know how other cultures exercise this because there's alot of similarities

Black spirituality works on black people because of our ancestors.

Our rituals don't work on people who aren't connected to us(other ethnicities)

My aunt be on that (I think) but my pops says she been on weird (negative) s*** with it.

Though, My pops has some crazy stories about santarias he went to see before and how accurate they were pertaining to his lifestyle at the time.
