  • For the past decade, artists have been vomiting up albums with over 20 tracks generate the most amount of streams and boost their sales.

GNX outselling $$$ last week just signaled a shift. The masses now value quality over quantity.

GNX got 12 tracks and is already 5 months old but it’s outselling $$ 4 You which aint even a month old. Not to mention it's stacked with over 20+ songs clearly designed to farm for streams.

Bro this might be the beginning of the end for bloated playlists disguised as albums. We are TIRED of scrolling through hour-long projects, picking 4-6 songs to keep, just to help labels pad them first-week numbers.

After a decade of this sales-first approach, it's great to see an album with proper sequencing and no filler won out

The beef was subtly a Ye 50 2007 moment but then again not really until the proverbial Wales Seans Drakes Cudis Coles etc (relative to the shadow of Graduation in the late 2000’s) start popping up in the shadow of Kendrick

GNX has Luther, TV Off and Not Like Us by proxy. $$$ has no songs you hear outside.

In sense of him not really trying to chase sales ironically giving him the most sales, yes but you wanna spin this logical shift of the music industry’s ethos after a decade of bullshit outside of this beef into something else because the thread is being framed as this coming at the expense of Drake’s loss

This convo kinda would be happening without the beef its just fitting that that is kinda what looks like it took us into a new era

She may be one of them. She definitely seems like a candidate for a Drake or Kendrick type positioning of the next big 3 assuming everything goes normal from here

Also my personal feelings aside that straight male comment probably killed off a lot of her momentum with male listeners, which has always been the biggest barrier with a woman rapper truly taking over the game as a top rapper. folks gotta tread carefully picking who to pander to lol. Drake s*** also kinda got shakey inversely when he went too Andrew Tate-y and started being too antagonistic towards women.

Gnx ain't left the top 40 since it debut too with a high chunk of it's tracks I still in the top 40 and most of the rest are still in the top 100 besides 2 songs

Might end up the biggest rap album of the streaming era ever so far if it continues it's already unprecedented trend - following the footsteps of NLU being the biggest Rap song of all time ever so far in the streaming era which also hasn't left the top 40 since its debut on YouTube (the og drop with the mansion coverart, not the video) with it's own unprecedented streak

This is all on Billboard and Spotify but ALSO the Drake approved not botted platform called Apple Music as well

The people have spoken - "real people want real music, the jig is UP"

I think outside of the 4 pop girls and Kendrick, all the best selling albums were 18+ tracks so nah I don’t think so

Billie, Sabrina, Charli and Chapelle coulda easily dropped 8 more songs and their fans wouldn’t have complained

It depends how consistent it does in the second half of the year

The 12 tracks does "hurt it" in that regard but if it stays at that crazy 60k to 90k every week which it's already been doing then it can get there - but already it's broken like every record of streaks it's wild

If he played the game more it might be already be there if he had like a doubled fw with a near doubled album - but then others would say the short tracklist actually helps with this album in particular with replay value keep looping with how the album is mostly just bangers that are catchy as hell and is the rare case where being short actually helps in this vein. It being long might have actually hurt like perhaps morale. Which was like half "bangers" and half long "real rap" songs.

But regardless - it's already one of the biggest period with real potential to be the biggest ever while so short and already on a streak higher and unheard of for like any other album - and certified biggest of the decade

The incentive to juice streams by releasing longer albums is fundamentally built into the entire streaming model. Nothing is going to magically remove that incentive, let alone one very popular rap album.

Unless for some impossible reason the masses return to a medium of music listening that incentivizes the consumer to purchase entire, individual albums like it was pre-streaming, you can expect the overall quality of albums to remain the same. Because why would it change. If you're really about the numbers and nothing else, there's literally no reason for you not to pad 3 great songs into a 19 track album because its so easy in Apple Music/Spotify/Youtube to grah those songs for yourself and leave the rest. The infrastructure is baked in. There is nothing that can just come along and break this spell because its not a spell.

There's like 10 artists who really move the needle and all of them are either vets or blew up pre covid. 2020s has no real stars and it's gonna hurt the industry real bad in the next few years.

yea and I’ve noticed there’s a lot of listeners who appreciate a long album cause they know “this will cover at least an hour and 15 minutes of background noise without me having to come back”
