dababy had a real run in 2019-2020 i can’t lie, strictly talking commercial success wise
he couldn't switch the flow up or drop quality albums though
you misread.
the fact that they barely drop music is why the bar is set so low
their projects set the bar higher not lower
Barely drop.

There should be zero complaints about Cole and the only complaint about Kendrick would be when a pandemic happened. I think the notion that they somehow never release is a false narrative.
You got Kendrick 4 years in a row for every year twice. You damn near got a cole project every year.
still don’t need a new one
Frank letting The Weeknd blaze past him is pretty crazy, can't really live off Blonde forever, it is great though
Barely drop.

you misunderstood again
I'm talking about the last 3-5 years, hiphop's been in a stagnation, and it could be attributed to the inactivity of the top guys like kendrick and cole.
since 2017 kendrick and cole have COMBINED only dropped 4 solo projects, meanwhile drake has dropped 4 in the last 3 years and is about to drop a 5th. so yes, recently, these guys barely drop
you misread.

Niggas can’t take a break for the first time in their nearly 2 decade careers? Especially to find more inspiration instead of flooding the fans with lower grades takes of their best work (Drake)

they could retire tomorrow it doesn't take away from their own legacies, but if you look at the grand-scheme of hiphop, there is nothing raising the bar high for the new guys.
meanwhile when kendrick and cole were coming up, they had to steal spotlight from guys like ye and wayne.
these days, the GOATs of the 2010s aren't active enough where the newcomers have any real pressure on em to compete
Damn that’s 14 projects he put out in 14 years but saying he is the reason why artist are lazy 😂
Not to mention Cole has been busy with features since 2018, and Kendrick has had big features over the last 15 years.

you could even include Forest Hills Live too even if that doesn’t appeal to everyone it’s still cool you don’t see it enough in rap
but yea these guys didn’t become two of the biggest rappers of all time by being scarce mythical droppers
the world has changed so much since cole kendrick and drake started dropping music, it would be like this regardless of whether Kendrick had an album or two more under his belt
we have moved away from a monoculture and towards people being able to find their niche and live in it, so the role of the everyman hip-hop superstar has kind of eroded, besides the artists who are grandfathered into it. and we just have that nostalgic desire to watch another artist rise like that, and it can't rly ever be quenched because the game has changed so much
a lot of young superstars who would be hitting their primes right now also passed away, looking at juice wrld, X, pop smoke, and others. those artists would be hitting that album 3-5 range right now and maybe would've sustained that type of feeling
they could retire tomorrow it doesn't take away from their own legacies, but if you look at the grand-scheme of hiphop, there is nothing raising the bar high for the new guys.

But you’re speaking about artists that came up during a time where there wasn’t as much of a freedom of choice as today due to streaming.
I think there are plenty of artists continuing to raise the bar in artistry today and maybe you just haven’t discovered them or are too stuck on the greats of the past
you misunderstood again

It shouldn’t be down to artists a decade into their careers to help push hip-hop forward, it’s always the youth pushing it forward. Maybe us fans who grew up in the late 00s-early 10s with Drake, Kendrick, Cole etc. are just growing into the dusty old heads we been mocking for the last decade for not moving on from Hov, Pac, Biggie and Nas. We’re just not connecting with the popular rap music of today’s generation n what’s wrong with that?
I think hip hop took more of a hit when artists like Future and Thug stopped consistently dropping projects
Absolutely no reason why Lil Baby took almost 3 years to drop a rehashed knockoff of My Turn and I think it slightly hurt the genre even if it was quietly successful
Barely drop.

They both f***ed up letting the pandemic take half a decade off their careers though
They both just basically went from Blueprint Jay to Kingdom Come jay overnight because the powers that be didn’t want them dropping. Squandering this much of your time while you’re still young and creative (allegedly) is so sad
I do agree that cole doesn’t really deserve the critique as much and has been on a feature run, but it’s about time, he better be dropping this winter
