George Clanton - 100% Electronica apologies for the messy review/thoughts and comparisons

to start I'm familiar with the artist but he's not really in my rotation I remember Ooh Rap I Ya from a couple years back but it wasn't really my thing (but I liked Justify your life tho that was sick)

my first thought was this was album sounds really nostalgic! my formative music years were during the peak of chillwave and other (at the time) internet microgenres. Washed Out, Neon Indian, Toro y Moi were some of my favorite artists during that time very influential to me I even had a lil chillwave project of my own lol

that said even though this feels inspired by that sound it def has a different approach in songwriting, perhaps more pop oriented (Washed Out was more vibes and Neon Indian more psych I guess?). but it's a super interesting take on that sound especially for the year it came out. to me it has kind of a 90s feel to it as well like Primal Scream or maybe something britpop-ish? alternative rock-ish? idk it could be the vocals lol but i like it a lot. REALLY NICE synths and drums on this very intoxicating patches and grooves. nails that hazy "Life of Leisure" Washed Out type of mood. "Bleed" and "It Makes the Babies Want to Cry" immediately caught my attention and I wish "Innocence" and "Purity" were longer lol (tbh my only complaint) and "Kill You in Bed" is sick it sounds like the credits song from a 90s movie

great rec i really liked it!! also appreciated the fact that it was under 40 min

  • @Tuneout

Laika is very sad (rip good girl) and simultaneously a great song . Best song on the album to me 14/10

Power out is aptly named and great , song is very electric , love this track , laika still the highlight but this is an awesome song 9.1/10

Wake up - ok this hard seeing why spike jones was obsessed with this song , I never listened to arcade fire heavikt but now I see how they are rocking, spamming these crooning vocals over crazy riffs but how they ride the beat is very crazy 13.2 /10

Haiti- the band has 2 elite singers and the female singer is very bjork- like . Interesting tho g about this song it sounds like the classic millennial 2010s boom clap music that would succeed it but if it were actually good10/10

In the backseat - literally sounds like bjork vocals (at points) thought she was featured on it at first , this is my second favorite track behind laika , very skrong closer 13.3 /10

(For You is the 1978 debut album by Prince, it’s got disco, funk, rock, soft acoustics, even a gospel acapella title…interlude)

Let me just say first off that Prince is one of my GOATs. That very reason is why his name’s logo is like the first patch I sewed onto my black denim jacket a couple years ago. I actually haven’t heard this entire album before though and I’m gonna do my usual music critic thing though but I just wanna get that out of the way for anyone that thinks otherwise

Now listening to this album in the context of Prince’s discography was very exciting because even at the very beginning, there’s still so much of his production style and personality all over this album. Even with the little details like the reversing of vocals on the opening title track (interlude?) that he would use more on Purple Rain or the gospel vibes of that track considering how spiritual his music would become throughout his career. Extending song structures like adding 2-3 more minutes for a bunch of instrumental changes/solos on Just As Long As We’re Together felt very Prince too. And the electric guitar parts? Dawg I smiled so widely when I first heard it on My Love is Forever.

As for judging this album on its own, I would still say I liked this album. It’s a pretty eclectic cut of tracks that remain memorable mainly due to the composition/production, but for a good majority of these tracks, the overall execution or the cohesion of all a song’s parts isn’t the strongest, especially with the lyrics.

Most of the lyrics off this album washed over me not gonna lie, thankfully the production usually carried but when it didn’t, it just sounded more like conventional genre music like the first half of Just As Long As We’re Together or I’m Yours. Obviously sounding like a single genre isn’t a bad thing, but with lyrics that don’t do much for me, they hardly stay memorable for me.

Credit to the songwriting on Baby though, I do like this Motown-era-sounding ballad playing with the meaning of that phrase ā€œwhat are we going to doā€ in the verses. Honestly that’s probably another thing I really like about Prince’s songwriting in general, the imagery/analogies he’d use on future projects like Cream off Diamonds and Pearls is like using s***as a***ogy for ambition, riding a plane on International Lover off 1999 or being on trial on Eye Hate U from The Gold Experience. Anyways I’m mentioning that because you see a little glimpse of that here, but also because I wanted to shout out those tracks lol

The production can also be occasionally tinny/thin. Soft and Wet establishes a decent groove but the synths are a little too sparse that for a good portion of the song it felt like something was missing.

I’m Yours is also a good example of my concerns about cohesion. There’s like clear ambition in its composition and I respect the sick guitar solos, but it doesn’t feel that well-incorporated into the song. Perhaps I’m just not big on the dramatic melody also. I don’t know why also, and I acknowledge this is my damage, during my first listen of it I could not listen to that main guitar riff and not hear the Attack on Titan season 1 theme song theme lol

Crazy You is probably the most cohesive/best executed here though. This is the only track I’ve heard prior but examining it closer now, I really appreciate the choices in production. The melody is sweetly romantic but also has a sense of intrigue that matches the lyrical vibes of Prince being surprised at how smitten he is for this person. The sparseness of the production makes this song feel small in the best way possible too, like he’s admitting all of this as a secret.

In summary, this album was a great experience listening as a Prince fan, and pretty solid to listen to on its own. It’s no Purple Rain, or even a Dirty Mind, but without For You there is no Purple Rain.

It’s also better than Rainbow Bridge.

Yeah this is a special album. I enjoy this. There’s something melancholic about it that I like and almost reminds me of a sad/punk Springsteen/Dean blunt (even though DB is kind of punk - kind of proto DB). I’ve been running this album back all week because I find a new song I enjoy on each listen. It’s almost like a piece of tiramisu. I’ve been revising this post each day after each play through this past week to dial down the songs I liked most but they’re all fighting for that number 1 spot. The only song I’m eh on is the hallelujah cover and that’s just because I feel like that song has been covered to hell and back.
I was not aware of his legacy, or really even knew who this guy was, but after doing some research, it appears he is somewhat significant in the music scene. I’m glad I listened to this album all week not knowing that because now I have that ā€œdammmmn, what could have beenā€ thought in the back of my head while listening.

These 11 tracks really showcase a wide range of what dude was capable of. Mojo Pin starts off as this somber, whirlwind of a track. I felt the guitar work was the main showcase of this track. And then the titular track is a shift in energy, a beautiful ballad ranging from more structured rock to almost shoegaze all the while using his voice as an instrument as well. Last goodbye was alright, kind of reminds me of a John Mayer/early 00s indie rock. I really enjoyed Lilac Wine, this track really showcased the beauty of his voice. So Real is a top 3 for me, this track immediately reminded me of Dean Blunt. The guitar has this eerie twang throughout the whole track and a distress to his voice that reminds me of a rock band in the twin peaks universe. Hallelujah is hallelujah but I will say I do love the bridge and him bringing it back at the end. Lover, You Should Come Over is great as well, another wonderful display of the range on his voice. Corpus Christi Coral is a great cover and adds to that haunting shoegaze feel of the album. Eternal Life is a great wake up from the past 3 slower tracks - nothing crazy about it just a nice palette cleanser. Dream Brother another top 3 and adds to that shoegaze feel plus a sort of prog rock element but also that early 10s indie rock feel. I’m torn on Forget Her being the closing track. I feel like it works well but at the same time I could have seen this track earlier in the album. Overall really loved this album with each play. I’m glad I didn’t know his legacy until after playing this a ton because now it doesn’t feel like I enjoy it just because it’s ā€œone of thoseā€ albums.

Overall what draws me to bjprk is how even in 2026 her music always feels like its pushing pop / dance music to its limits both in her lyrics and song structure cause who is making a song like theres more to life than this today? It sounds like the chorus is being played live in a club and she's singing in the studio. Its one of the most unique and well produced songs ive ever heard.

this album gives off a special emotional feeling that is super hard to describe, theres longing for people and connection like in Aeroplane or Crying or Violently Happy and i can feel a sadness and loneliness at the same time in so much of the songs, but its not pessimistic, its actually very weirdly optimistic (One Day) like even though you feel sadness loneliness or heartbreak you will get through it eventually and you will never get to that feeling if you dont persevere .

And i dont even have to mention it but nobody represents the butterflies in your stomach feeling like bjork. Like Someone In Love is that feeling in straight audio form and same with Venus As a Boy.

And then the closer Anchor Song which sounds a bit depressing with the saxophone but i interpret the lyrics just being true to yourself and your home no matter where the currents take you, and there i can kind of see why this album is so matter of factly named debut

I really loved this album and i cant even really name a song i didn't like , Glad i actually gave this a thorough listening

Glad you got something positive out of the experience, i myself only heard people saying amazing things about the album beforehand so i had my expectations high going in and i still really liked it. He has that very sad and longing desperation in his voice especially on a song like last goodbye which is stuck in my head even now. And i agree with hallelujah cause i htink its just been seeped too much into the culture id hear it on a lot of tv shows as a kid so i was kinda surprised when i found it its one of the most popular or well received covers of the song

Bro got me listening to fewtch.

When I was listening through this my thoughts on how to rate each sing basically went like:

Using this important measurement scale, it did indeed contain many doohickeys! Weird ass intro aside, the album starts off with a bop with you deserve it and while i do like the chorus on this sing the album ACTUALLY starts for me on first class flights. As soon as u hear those horns in the intro u alrdy KNO IM BUYIN FIRST CLASS FLIGHTS ON THESE P**** NIGGAS

Fewtch sounds aggro and just slidin on this.

Following this we get jealous and one of the singles of the album with turn on the lights. Jealous was kinda whatever to me but turn on the lights is another doohickey. Just like those synth (?) loops throughout the song like he somewhat does with Draco. Straight up (Big booty freak and she fartin straight up)

My and Same Damn Time is another 2 piece combo of

Even if his flow on My is hella repetitive. Same damn time u already kno i heavy fw it but i never heard the remix before but I feel like Luda clears Diddy and Fewtch on this I'm afraid.

To go through the next sings quickly. Most of em have quite catchy choruses altho sounding a bit dated such as magic, homicide, neva end, and I'm trippin (juicy J clears fewtch on this too) With dated it's mostly the beats and occasionally his voice too tho due to the catchiness i still find myself boppin to em.

Parachute with Kells is a weird but fun one. Kells comes through with a nice verse but on the chorus it doesnt sound like Kells nor Fewtch on it After this i didnt rlly like any other songs save for astronaut chick kinda. Here the dated and his voice rlly do sound bad imo and Trae the truth is prolly the WORST feat on this shi cause nigga sounds he need to drink some WATER.

Overall an enjoyable debut (?) with some absolute heaters but also some sings that sounds hella dated in a not so good way.

    6.5/10 With Kells & Diddy -100000000/10
