Feel like no one was expecting him to go pop after Trilogy
not really when you sign to a major label you not gonna be expecting someone to make an album like he did with kissland
This album legit sounded like what would be on the radio in the 2010’s and s*** was released in 2004.
It had all the bookmarks for a breakout: Adele level talent, production from people like Timbaland and props from people like Elton John.
But that hack LA Reid and the c***s at Island Def Jam did f*** all marketing for it like they usually did for big artists around that time and it never latched on.

I mean we didn't expect it. But the kid was clearly going to ascend past where he was at. We should've probably seen it coming he was getting co-signs left and right his sounds was fresh and exciting at the moment. Many people wanted to mimic it but few if any could pull it off like him.
I think kiss land was him trying to have his cake and eat it too. He wanted to make this lush beautiful record that tip toed between mainstream appeal and his old sound. It clearly didn't work out for him I think he got scared and asked for help. That's when guys like max martin stepped in to show him how to craft pop records albeit I believe he's always been capable of it but it's clear he's gotten way better at it, he's found incredible success in that lane I don't think hes ever going back.
