Dawn FM & Mr. Morale were overshadowed by dumb ass Stan sales wars. Mr. Morale had the added bonus of triggering the ED Twitter community with Auntie Diaries. Both 9/10 albums at least.

DS4 doesn’t come close to Dawn FM, different level, different leagues.

Sudan archive. I don’t get it her album wasn’t that good. I think she’s a indie industry plant.

More and more I find myself confused with album reception

Pusha T and The weeknd just this year dropped some of their best work and reception among critics and fans seems shockingly lukewarm

Even fka twigs dropped her best body of work to date and yet it seems like nobody talks about it in best of conversations for the year so far

not even close to LP1 let alone the masterpiece that is Magdalene

still better than FlopFM and Midsteppers

After the success of the After Hours Til Dawn Tour, and the success of the Dawn FM songs in the tour, the reception of the album when it dropped is even more confusing.

    Honestly, Untitled by Nas.

That album had all sorts of controversy surrounding it at the time of its release cause of the OG title but it was actually a standard conscious rap album that touched on social issues and Black history.

The way the album was panned and treated as "controversial" at the time, you'd think Nas was rapping like Dead Prez or something or saying "Edomites" or some s***.

Even stranger is how the album isn't even bigged up like that by rap fans yet 4:44 and TPAB get all the attention. Of course, the latter are better albums but Untitled always get overlooked for its type of content.

the music itself hasnt aged all that well

Streaming’s biggest demographic is 16-24 year olds. They not trying to hear music and lyrics, they just want a beat to turn up to. Even Drake can’t break through that (case in point, Honestly Nevermind) without dropping memeworthy derivative trap anthems (I.e. Way 2 Sexy, Girls Like Girls). It’s why Yeat can hop in a studio for 10 mins and grunt unintelligibly over a hard beat and get hyped to death for it. 20 years from now nobody will be listening to DS4 while Dawn FM is timeless.

Any album that’s not “outside music” has to target core fanbase and white women (I.e. Adele, Harry Styles) with physical sales to make any billboard mark.

When’s the last time anyone remembers an album that doesn’t fit into the categories above having both amazing critical reception and high sales?

I actually didn’t listen to it right away. I saw the massive hate circle jerk first then listened to it when I saw two dudes irl talking about it positively

It’s a good project. Niggas just dislike Chance as a person mostly

I think they’re a little smarter than you’re giving them credit for. These artists wouldn’t be popular if it was only a good beat, there’s cadence, delivery, rhyme. It’s not carried by production just because it’s not lyrical

I mean you have to sound good on the beat but being able to keep up with a good one is all you need. Lyrical content doesn’t matter at all as long as you’re not saying anything controversial.

A finely-tuned songwriting masterpiece will never have better public reception/sales than an album full of speaker-banging anthems in the streaming era.

Fans unironically calling the new Kendrick aoty or even his magnum opus is nuts to me. Easily the lowest effort he's ever put in and it shows

The biggest example is how people love FSMH Pt. 1 more than NMPILA.
