Well I mean it is. Since we’re watching it. Then I guess there’s a third layer to it then? But it does feel like with the Plemmons reveal that it’s something like big tech or whatever equivalent reclaiming the narrative on a macro level with him putting the show on in the first place. Then once we go outside we see that yeah, they are living in hell and fascism did take over. It’s just now the story of Digger is kind of co-opted by the corporations and he’s turned to the villain in the world in order to get people okay with what’s going on.

the world needs a fall guy and digger is that fall guy . That unites them so they don’t have to hold themselves accounTable for living in the same cycle

I honestly thought this was pretty great overall. Although it beats you over the head with the messaging that it brings the overall movie down

That one scene where Hannah and Curtis arguing about the direction of the play was soooo heavy handed in regards of the movie's message I felt wasn't really needed.

Honestly i would much prefer if the movie didn't reveal it was a play until the very end, have it be a slow subtle reveal. Where things are clearly not natural (like the mannequins in the crowd and the exaggerated acting). I dont think any of the outside play scenes really contributed much to the story

The whole daughter plot line was very unnecessary imo.

But overall i like what it was doing, the performances and production were stellar

daughter plot line is also Jesse character manipulation to me . Goes from can’t make any contact to getting in touch with his daughter at exactly the climax . Plemons character is partially constructing this narrative to keep heat off his modern day crimes

I think they're also trying to confuse the viewers to think that the outside world was still okay and the most climate related issue they had to worry bout is a hurricane to then rug pull at the end with the play being real life. but just felt like the contribution to the overall movie was lacking

I think part of the final damning fact is that preaching to the choir became the closest they became to revolution. Clapping and paying for content also made by a reprehensible human being. Who paid and manipulated the actors , audience and reality

I’m so confused by the critic reactions. Even if you didn’t like the movie, Hollywood needs more movies like this.

I’d rather see a director gamble and miss, over so many of the same safe movies that gets released

Hollywood does not need more unfinished movies loaded up with too many ideas and successful at executing none of them

Well yeah it has to land since they spend most of the runtime shoving it in your face

That doesn't mean it's conveyed interestingly or well

There have been so many movies this year and past years that are hamfisted to me . I persona ally think this one getting hit harder because it questions the audience where most preach to choir

In what way does this movie question the audience

My read is that this movie has zero respect for the audience and thinks they're stupid

My personal read is that Jesse Plemons character in many ways is the true antagonist. He profits from a dark comedy about his uncle. But he himself has strong connections to modern tech industry of the rich walking past dead bodies to relive the same comedy. Clapping and screaming to the point they are in tears. Exploiting their trauma. I also think he is partially behind the continuation of MODERN problems but for all that digger and a fictionalized dramatized play is a good thing to get them focusing on a DECEASED ENEMY. I dont limit this to climate change. It can apply to war on terror. It Can apply to views of Trump in the future when we eventually see a movie about Trump presidency. Its about CONSTRUCTION OF A SHARED ENEMY. Then society reveling in seeing that shared enemy as stupid , suffering then eventually dead. in real life the actor playing him is suffering due to fear his daughter is dead. Yet even then he cares about depicting the truth about digger vs sensationalism and lies. Plemons character makes clear the lies do not matter because society needs lies. He conveniently gets a call from his daughter at the climax of the film. We go to films for escapism , news at times to see how bad others have it , we clap at the suffering of "evil" people while often enabling and giving money directly to those same systems.

But again as I said how you feel about this I feel about Primetime so I understand it. I think many would like if this movie had no twist in any form. Could it be argued that it could have executed its twist better by Much less of the movie taking place in the play and more of it taking place in modern times. Perhaps but I dont know how much people wanted to see of the present. I am saying Plemons family is orchestrating both the past and the present . Digger is a fall guy for modern problems and keeps people distracted from changing history. In a way dooomed to repeat history if we dont LEARN from our past but at time we disguise entertainment for learning

I am partially asking which recent movie to you executes its plot well with good writing thats not hamfisted? That treats the audience with respect? Because in my personal opinion most major films of the past 6 years do not. S*** most major pieces of art do not treat the audience like they are intelligent.

In many ways when it becomes the dichotomy of trash or greatest of all time often with very little in between besides mid when it comes to discussing art. I think there is fair reason to think the audience isnt intelligent at times.

We often say media literacy is low but all it takes is a tweet or twitter campaign for someone to say one battle after the other has a racist depiction of black women

People dont really think for themselves. Down to "I am not seeing Digger because the tomato was green and I only see red tomato movies". Metacritic as a platform at times yes can be helpful but at times i do think people give their free will to people they dont know , have never met and often have entirely different taste then.

    Well, I saw it....

It seemed like the message was just the ol' "Make Hitler the fool at your own peril. Satire about Trump and the current administration ends up functioning as controlled opposition. You laugh at the cartoon and when nothing feels real you start to forget you're being f\*\*\*ed from behind."

That's what I got out of it. And if that's what it's trying to say, I have major issues with this film.

The fool is the fall guy but the problems existed both before and after the fool. The Media sells you mass produced hate of the fool because its a great distraction. Its great escapism. when or if Trump is deceased people will celebrate in the street, cry, clap. They did for the death of Osama Bin Laden but nothing CHANGED. The war on terror did not cease in anyway shape or form. They sold you a fictional retelling in zero dark thirty suddenly uncovered that he was watching anime in a house chilling . Its the idea that the problem ceases with the person. When the family of the person is directly profiting and still has a strong control on reality as he can produce a play in a dystopia and instantly trace any phone number even if there is no signal

I enjoyed this tbh. Chuckled often throughout, looked and was staged incredible, some very funny moments/ performances.

One couple out of the maybe 10 of us in there walked out during the third act which i will say did start to feel a lil long in the tooth

    Overall I dug it
