    Alejandro's point makes no sense.

The audience isn't laughing at themselves, they're laughing at a specific group of politicians and power players. If Alejandro wanted us to earnestly meditate on the cathartic power of art, the only evidence he gives for that is the speech given by Kenny (something TOLD to us, with dramatic irony that mirrors ideas of controlling the narrative discussed in the play) and a brief audience reaction where they cry and mutter "fuck you" under their breath. Which is then immediately followed by an ending which undercuts it and highlights the dramatic irony of the situation. Alejandro never pauses to show reverence for art. The more I think about it the more I think Alejandro does want us to fall somewhere in between, despite constructing a movie that argues much more convincingly for the cynical interpretation. This is partly because it's a much more dramatically interesting thesis. What's interesting about "art gives us catharsis, and that's good, but still the world sucks"? No s\*\*\*. That's a really tepid and boring point to make! It doesn't justify the framing device.

No matter what angle you look at the movie from, you run into problems. I just think the movie doesn't work.

I don’t think by “ourselves” he means the literal audience members, I think he means the collective ourself as a human race

The point is it’s co-opted by nefarious people that don’t actually care about the causes they care about MONEY. He doesn’t run an art company . He doesn’t even continue environmentalism company he inherited . He runs a SECURITY company in a dystopia. Used for MASS SURVEILLANCE. If someone running mass surveillance creates art they give the ILLUSION of revolutionary content while their actions don’t reflect that . They buy the idea from the POOR. Change the songs meaning as the credits make clear . Those that fund movies create cuts that abandon THE ORIGINAL ARTIST message and purpose . The original artist were AMERICAN they wrote it as a response . The movie is directed by a billionaire who choose all the actors and a cast of British people removed from Americas reality

Nowhere in the movie does it say that the original playwright was an American. The first iceburg hit Europe, so it makes sense that the play is a British production, they were the first victims

Wow another person saying exactly what I was saying

    Who would have thought

Like this is technically not wrong but it just seems like such a juvenile, surface level takeaway from the movie. “The billionaires are EVIL!!!” Yeah no s***

If Alejandro really didn't intend this then he's horrible at optics It absolutely reads as a story about controlled opposition. Kenny perfectly mirrors Digger when he tells Ginesh to tell the truth.

It’s a minor theme throughout, not the main idea the movie is trying to drive home

that is one thing who knows . None of that changes the rest of what I said . It’s co-opted but a security billionaire in a dystopia. It’s naive to think he is a good guy

It’s so surface level that you spent all day saying Kenny Rockwell likely made no changes and just loved art

We’ve reached this point of the discussion I see, bringing up irrelevant things that I enjoy as a way to dismiss my thoughts

The take away isn’t rich people are evil ….

I’m saying that the movie itself says that the play was already a beloved classic and never makes any mention of him changing aspects about the play. If you disagree with that then you’re referencing elements of the movie that do not exist in the movie

No I’m mentioning it because that movie is more divided and limited to class than this movie . This is saying much more than that and jonboi and I are discussing it and I posted multiple articles backing up what we are saying

I never said those themes aren’t an aspect of the movie

I said they are not the MAIN THEME of the movie

The same way themes about parental anxiety are present in Resident Evil but it is not the central idea of the movie. Themes can exist in a story without being the main theme

“ main “isn’t our point . What makes this movie not tedious and actually the most worthwhile is that second theme and twist . Without it this movie could be trimmed down

The second twist only reinforces the main theme, not the controlled narrative aspects
