Genuine question what’s the main theme to you ?
That movie doesn’t really have a main thematic throughline, it’s about the spectacle
Who is the “rest of us” ?
You linked one article
Brother jonboi and many of us in thread have a different but shared interpretation. I understand your perspective fully . Who can’t the character literally says it in a monologue

Ok

And I’ll keep saying, if that’s your main takeaway from the movie, you’re doing a disservice to this movie. It’s tryna say something way more complex than that

This is a bigger disservice to the film than anything we’ve said
This is the kind of lane I wish refn would land in . Closest I’ve gotten to a Hodorowsky movie in years

my first watch of a film by Iñárritu, on the big screen. hearing about its divisiveness prior to my viewing made it that much more appealing to me.
this was a huge swing for the fences, bold in its delivery, messaging, and cinematography. it had such a desolate feel and it really resonated with me. the twist was done tastefully at the beginning of the film and really set the tone for the type of satire it was going for.
Tom Cruise delivers a once in a lifetime performance. he commanded the screen in every scene he was in, especially his bombastic monologue. Riz Ahmed follows suit and was an outstanding supporting performance, along with Sandra Hüller and John Goodman.
the ending was especially bleak, and that’s what stuck with me the most. as exaggerated and silly as this film can be, its final moments were a mirror into our reality. it’s a reminder of what our future could look like in the not-so-distant future, and I hope we can enact meaningful change in my lifetime.
8/10
Also he did definitely create changes this is the 25th anniversary of the cult classic. Its made clear curist markson read the original script multiple times throughout the movie. Thats part of why Curtis reacts.
They comparing this to The Odyssey

that isnt what that tweet means if you are referring to the tweet I posted
Yeah, I'm definitely going to see this again. Probably next week in dual laser GT IMAX before Street Fighter replaces it

yeah this rewatch going to go crazy
I’m stuck on how the way the movie is shot changes after his monologue to Curtis.
Every other “play” scene is shot like it’s on a three walled stage. The camera only starts to break the plane of the stage and show the empty theater as Curtis grows disillusioned with how it’s portraying the story, at odds with his research and the real Digger Rockwell.
But once he’s back in, the oil rig galley set is shot like a traditional movie, unlike any other “play” scene. It’s a fully built set, the camera much more closely follows the actors through it.
He’s fully immersed in the story and we don’t see the audience again or any sense of a stage until they break into the cheers Kenny wanted them to get from the story in the end.
Curtis knew the facts. Kenny got to write the story.
