I don't know why that means you can't be African though. Nothing wrong with being African. the term is there bc you probably don't have access to the exact country your ancestors are from. You don't have a real connection to that culture, that is true, but why distance ourselves from it? what's so good about being American?
I get that it may feel disrespectful or whatever but that's just how s*** is. If you're not white you get called X-American. as an important trading area egypt was extremely diverse. the trouble is there is no single definition of egypt because it had literally thousands of years of history of different groups invading and living there. some white people try to claim egyptians were white because of the ptolemaic dynasty in the new kingdom were originally from macedonia (greece), but that's clearly not representative of what everyone looked like.
the reality is that applying our modern conceptions of race to ancient civilizations like egypt is extremely anachronistic and doesn't make much sense because it simply wasn't thought of in the same way. funnily enough assassins creed origins actually did a pretty solid job of representing the diversity of ancient egyptians lol
