The anime industry would be the exact same if Samurai Champloo never existed lol.

    But the culture wouldn’t

quintuplets is a game changer the anime industry doesn't revolve around the west dude

    Don’t care about the “industry”
I’m talking about culture and in terms of cultural impact and transcendence, one of these things is not like the other. I don’t think that’s a far fetched thing to say at all regardless of where you reside.

My regards to the people of Japan But this stuff doesn’t just live and die in Japan lol. That’s like putting out a song that pops off in Germany but no one in America knows it so we just completely disregard the cultural impact it’s having in Germany. That’s not even really a good comparison because neither of us are taking into account the internet. But let’s just say not a single person in japan knows what champloo is. I find this incredibly hard to believe considering the number of people that live in Japan but I don’t live there so I’ll take your word for it . Obviously, here in the west, anyone even remotely adjacent to anime has heard of or seen champloo. Online or offline, YouTube, IG, Tik Tok, whether it’s artist, illustrators, animators, designers, even musicians and producers, etc…you can come across an entire generation of people who clearly grew up watching this show. Keep in mind, champloo is not that old. a lot of these people are just now coming of age and most of them are people of color. So there is no structure or industry here or abroad yet to even support them on the same scale yet the impact is still evident. Now I don’t know what niggas in Japan who enjoy QQ are doing. I don’t know if the show has simply given them the confidence they needed to talk to girls, I’m sure it’s influenced many and warmed the hearts of others there but I’ve seen and am seeing entire ecosystems being built off the strength of niggas who grew up watching champloo with my own 2 eyes, there’s 2 here in Atlanta alone. I’m sure it’s the same story in New York, LA, Chicago, etc…and that energy is JUST getting started. That holds a little more weight to me than QQ is funny and people in Japan know it.

I don't even think Champloo is as famous in the west as you think it is (though I do believe what you say is true in primarily African-American/POC circles), which I think is what influences your view heavily about how impactful it is (and that's fair, it's the same reason I can feel QQ's impact because I live in a community that was impacted heavily by it, whereas it did not take off nearly as hard in the west).

Also, nobody is hyperbole man. Yes, I'm sure there are people who have watched Samurai Champloo in Japan. But it's not like other anime in that same time period that had lasting power and are still brought up on the regular today.

I'll say this since I didn't state as much in my initial post: I don't think Samurai Champloo is a bad anime. I watched it and enjoyed it. I just dislike when people people dismiss other shows (particularly in the romantic comedy/romance genre) that they usually haven't even really watched because "this is the CLASSIC bro!!!"

At the end of the day, we’re both speaking from our own personal experiences. Can’t necessarily say your take is wrong. I just feel the need to provide a bit of context whenever it’s insinuated that a show like this essentially meant nothing and means nothing because of it’s more western influence. The people who watched this show were like 13, 14, 15, etc…when this first came out, now they’re in their early to mid 20s. I promise you the impact this show has and had hasn’t even been fully felt yet because there’s no structure to back it but it will be.

Champloo def not a game changer. I will compare it to a Kendrick album with it being just really good for what it is but I don't see much direct influence except maybe niche parts of the industry. There's cool references here and there in some animes, but I just don't see anything that's tried to copy it or directly take inspiration from it
