i think they are actually related. i believe that scene where he is holding onto his sisters back while she walks through the snow is supposed to imply that they were together before they found the orphanage and at that young age i'd assume they were siblings

im an anime only watcher for heavenly delusion but ill spoiler my theory just in case. This might just be me looking too much into visual language but f*** it

Maru is related to that one girl in the facility who has short hair and the same hair colour as him. In ep 1 short hair girl's friend says that when she imagines about going outside, two people come to help her, and one of their faces is the same as short hair girls.

The super crackpot theory to this is that hes her son. The face of the girl with the black hair is really elongated compared to the other kids in the facility + her bigger eyes made me hate her design because she looks like a f\*\*\*ing fish. She is the fish at the end of ep 3 so that means the outside scenes take place years after the facility scenes. Also the scene at the end of ep 3 where shes chillin in front of a fish tank isnt super subtle.

i just skimmed through the episodes to find all the scenes in the facility and theres a scene where she was given the fish drawing and climbs onto a tree the same way that the fish at the end of ep 3 could climb onto the boat window
