yep skip and loafer is just based.

this is gonna be another bocchi case with a bunch of shounen fighter bros being haters but this is possibly the anime of the season.

EEEEEh Oshi No Ko is still leading so far.

Skip and loafer is not as eccentric or comedic pushing as Bocchi. Loafer will be a niche classic though like horimiya

I just started logging the Manga i've read on Anilist and just realized how big this task is. Especially one shots, shorter series are impossible to remember

Man I gave up on that. There's so much s*** I probably read and forgot back from high school to now.

I tried to watch Horimiya and dropped it literally in a matter of seconds as soon as the teacher started harassing the female students. Miss me with that s*** tbh.

The ending of the latest Hell's paradise ep

  • May 11, 2023

Irei's storyboards give me life. That Idolmaster ep was one of the best out of everything airing this season.

  • May 11, 2023

i remember reading the first volume of hell's paradise and enjoying it but i never ended up continuing it. the anime so far has been the definition of mid. like there isn't anything necessarily wrong or bad with it, it just feels so average in every aspect that it's almost ends up being boring. it's an odd feeling to have cause i don't dislike it but when the episodes end i just sorta feel like "meh, that was alight i guess".

Happy Belated Birthday to Ryosuke Sawa a.k.a Ryo-Timo or Ryo-Chimo. Often considered one of the first web-gen animators, Timo was an animator that no one could anticipate to make a splash in the industry, but he did. Timo’s use of applications like Flash in animation completely changed the sakuga medium, and though he kind of fell out of being the big action animator, he became a great director and let others run where he walked.

Timo’s industry introduction came back as early as 2004 where Osamu Kobayashi on *Beck Mongolian Chop Squad. He was scouted due to Kobayashi’s attention from his amateur flash animations at the time. The fruits of his talents paid off and he quickly got a KA spot on one episode. Yes at the time Timo can be considered webgen. He was essentially making internet gifs, and had no prior training to animation beforehand, being a self-taught student of the game.

hortly after we get to Aquarion Evol where Timo would make an acquaintance with the true grandfather, the proto-webgen animator Satoru Utsunomiya. The training and mentorship under Utsunomiya helped Timo recognize his strengths as an animator because on Episode 19 he did some spectacular character acting all carefully crafted within Utsunomiya’s parameters (a la heavy AD correction) sakugabooru.com/post/show/181799\. It’s crazy how fast Timo rose up in the KA ranks, cause at the time he still felt like an amateur, but was doing these very vibrant somewhat unfiltered cuts.

After doing KA on Kamichu! and Black Lagoon Timo ends up on Noein. The mentorship of Utsunomiya during this show is incredibly important, and can’t be understated but the other mentor/master that trained him during the show’s run was Norio Matsumoto. It’s safe to say that Timo was being guided by a prime Matsumoto. Coming right out of 2004 penning the legendary Naruto vs Sasuke fight, Norio was the man for the job hopping on Noein cause he already had familiarized himself with crazy deformed action and knew his approach to a T. He’d do a ton of layouts on Noein and even nearly solo KA one episode.

It might have seemed like Timo just had a stroke of luck working with some of the top animators of Japan at the time, but it would only get better. If you want an example of just how good Timo was on this show look no further than Episode 12 where an insane fight erupts

Between this scene and the Norio sakuga there is something noticeably different and it’s Timo’s Flash skills paying off in dividends. Flash animation has a noticeable look to it. It is incongruous, off-model, and regularly fairly crude. However due to Timo’s training from Matsumoto particularly these kinds of deformations are normal. Notice how the laser beams fired by the characters are essentially reverted to scribbles?

That’s what happens when Timo is animating on a tablet, you can use this irregularity to convey a sense of speed that can’t be conveyed well on paper (unless you’re Norio Matsumoto). All of the smoke and water effects have no shading to them either another prominent Matsumoto trait.

Timo also takes advantage of these super scribbly drawings of Karasu. This is something barely ever seen in sakuga especially with the hair strands being irregularly transparent in some areas and others not. I imagine this scene was a nightmare for the compositing department.

Timo would do multiple cuts throughout the show, even being a part time AD on Episode 24. Being an AD a year into the industry is unthinkable, nearly unheard of. Only few animators like Toshiyuki Inoue even excelled so quickly. So yes Noein was an unbridled extremely ahead of its time in regards to experimentation. Thanks to Matsumoto’s influence Timo was adorned with an array of sakuga weaponry on his side.
