I don't even think I had a top 5. All I did was watch the generic popular stuff that people talked about at the time and they all f***ing sucked.

Can't believe I actually bothered sticking with anime after such a terrible start. Didn't take anyone's opinion seriously ever again after my first like three months and just decided to find and choose my own s*** to watch instead of asking other people.

Clannad still peak anime

I started off by looking at high scoring anime with low popularity. I think at the time something like Aria the Origination on MAL was in the top 25 in terms of score but was like 1000+ popularity. Was my first non-mainstream anime I ever watched and I loved it. Basically followed that method for a little bit and once I had seen enough shows that way I started paying attention to staff and would just check out the other shows of directors who worked on my favourite shows.

Once you've seen enough, it just starts to snowball. Nobody who has seen Aria the Origination is talking about generic starter anime like Death Note or Re:Zero, they're talking about more obscure and niche stuff like Sora no Woto and Haibane Renmei. Then SnW and HR fans will talk about stuff that's even more obscure and niche. Repeat over and over again until you end up watching Taiwanese puppet shows like Thunderbolt Fantasy.

Jojo, AoT, and Kill la Kill being my first jump into enjoying anime past the usual toonami block was such a goated start.
