Furukawa is a disciple of Ikuhara. I actually had to go check who the director of the show was after I watched the first episode when it initially aired because of how similar their styles are. Over the last couple of years I've started to grow more fond of cinematography (or layouts, storyboards, whatever you wanna call it) in anime over animation, and the Revue Starlight series has some of the best cinematography in tbe last like five years imo.
this is sad af
a lot of amazing anime are never going to be remastered
more lost media
the movie looks stunning
I watched the movie last week and would say it's one of the best pieces of anime I've ever seen.
That's not saying the show itself isn't as good because I loved the themes and everything there as well
Monster episodes 42-46 so far been dragging a bit
I like the show tho, didn’t expect cause I’m not into anime

Happy Belated Birthday to Masashi Ishihama born September 1st. One of anime’s most revered OP and ED directors, Ishihama has made a name for himself for his ephemeral visual style through experimentation and evisceration of common norms. Coming up in the late 80s and 90s, Ishihama worked in environments frequently touted with unique creatives. Ones such as Yasuomi Umetsu, Mamoru Hosoda and Akiyuki Shinbo, the latter being particularly influential in Ishihama’s aesthetic and filmic languages. From the 2000s onward Ishihama’s OP’s have been a great case study, and after a certain point he would only animate on his own OPs and nowhere else. His use of cross-dissolves, texture mapping, lens trickery, and simplified character designs have led to an insatiable palette of colors and spectacle. Not only is his direction stunning, but his use of editing and timing to music is damn near flawless, and successfully conveys so many emotions and themes throughout. Ishihama’s style has catered to students of his such as Shingo Yamashita (another god of the anime OP) and even acquaintances such as Hisashi Mori who applies much of what Ishihama innovated in his own key animation.
Ishihama’s early career involved him doing first doing in-between animation on Devilman then becoming a freelancer on some of the most lavish OVAs of the 90s including The Hakkenden, Shin Hurricane Polymar, and Kite. His weird tendencies would begin to show up on other shows such as Kite where he was a primary character designer for most of the non-Umetsu touched characters, and Kare Kano where Hideaki Anno brought out a lot of zaniness within the entire animation crew.
After the first Digimon movie Ishihama went to work on Tenamonya Voyagers with director Akiyuki Shinbo. Ishihama was now an established character designer and animation director and he now had full reign over a project.
His first responsibility was helming the OP which, in usual Shibo fashion is bizarre, with the characters in washing machines (sorry can’t find a source for it other than this video youtu.be/ssLHFN0zIbc, but it’s out there on its own somewhere). The more bizarre moments of this show can be specifically found on Episode 2. The show already has a ton of super lively and energetic movement, but here everything is obscured an dwindled down, reducing things to singular colors and darkness to help outline character silhouettes. sakugabooru.com/post/show/30089
This is not only in part thanks to Ishihama and Shinbo’s ambitious boards, but also animator Hisashi Mori being completely adept at this. Ishihama and Mori were friends on Sailor Moon and Mori had always been innovating new ways to push Kanada style animation into bizarre territory using chalky strokes, and purposefully obtuse shapes.
