I'm liking Sign of Affection and I know this is an anime thing but imma need Itsuomi to stop patting Yuki on the head like she's some sort of wild animal, Oushi's attitude is also problematic but I'm more interested in him out of the guys right now cause I feel like he just sees Yuki as a “disabled person” rather than a human being and I’m kinda interested in the way the show will address the issue of disabled people being coddled and treated like they are completely helpless

Not sure how true this is but I read that the mangakas worked closely with a friend who is deaf and I feel like it shows with them describing how direct Oushis sign language is and just hearing Yukis anxiety about wanting to approach people.

As a romance I don’t think I will care about this at all but the deaf representation interests me so far. Also I just really like Yuki and how the world is depicted through her

I think the head patting showcases quite well the difference between their worlds. For him that probably means nothing, just like that girl in ep 1 kissed him as a greeting. He's treating her like he would anyone else, while for her on the other hand this is a new experience as she is used to people being overly cautious towards her.

But yeah he kind of needs to stop now.

that was kinda my issue with the first episode. I just didn't much care about any character. Yuki and Itsuomi just feel like shoujo fantasy characters. Maybe I'm getting too old but its just so trope-y with the typical big masculine protector with the small infantilized girl trying to see into each others worlds. I also just find that A Silent Voice handled the dynamic in a far more real way. I love romance anime but lately I have been feeling most of the new series are just so predictable now (dress up darling, angel next door, horimiya, tonikawa, sing yesterday for me, kaguya, etc.). I still enjoy some of those because theyre entertaining but I miss the days of shows like Golden Time, Maid Sama, Kimi Ni Todoke, your lie in april, etc. where there were real conflicts and it wasn't just a straight up predictable speed run of two characters ending up together.

Apart from Fruits Basket, my other fav romance anime I've seen this decade were probably Skip to Loafer and Fuukoi because those brought those vibes that I want to see in the genre

Not Ikarashi SB/AD, Kanno apparently. Which isn’t too surprising, their styles are nearly identical

I read it like the white hair guy is just bold like that and would try to pull that with any girl. Bro would obv get slapped in some cases but idk I think he won her over. Pretty privilege. I did like that he already sends her pictures and brought her a gift.

The other guy was acting like a b**** imo. A little too passive aggressive for me. White hair guy is outplaying him like crazy.

if that is true at least it looks pretty, so might be worth that

Also hate that it was marketed as Okada and Mappa, but that criticism has been levied too many times and just comes with the product atp

yeah i dont agree with this at all

if this was some super popular series then id understand wanting trigger to put their efforts elsewhere, but prior to this adaptation, dungeon meshi was fairly niche online and the only place you could find solid discussion of it was on /a/.

im already seeing a lot of people get introduced to this series finally just off this adaptation and enjoying it

  • Jan 15, 2024

plus the wacky and chaotic nature of dungeon meshi fits in well with triggers other works tbh this is a great addition to their catalogue

wouldnt want anyone else to adapt it besides maybe madhouse

its definitely wacky and jumps the shark at times but it's also hilarious, entertaining, and had me in shambles multiple times with its unpredictable relationship dynamics. That last part is what is missing in modern day romance / rom com anime besides Fruits Basket (which doesn't even really count tbh since its such an old manga)
