Hope they make a series out of it like game of zones
Yes, now it’s our time they just fumbled the bag to make it look like Kuroko’s Basketball.
TOKYO REVENGERS RANT PT 1
SPOILERS!!
I have a lot of unorganized thoughts about Tokyo Revengers so I’m just gonna talk about them in this loose form.
The reason I started watching it is because I wanted a fun accessible anime to watch weekly. Interesting but just casual enough for me to tap into it every week. I knew it was going to be cliche and I knew the time travel wasn’t going to make sense. Overall the anime did its job but I’m more invested in talking about it than I did actually watching the anime.
The biggest and most obvious issue this anime has is Takemitchy, the protagonist, being a very dumb character. Stupid with a heart of gold is not a bad trope. Most main characters in shounen are like that and it makes them likable and inspirational when they overcome their struggles and reach their goals. Takemitchy’s goal, saving his girlfriends life and his inner more personal goal, fixing his childhood so that he doesn’t become such a loser (not vocalized but it’s clear this is what the story’s actually about) are relatable and admirable.
The problem is this anime is kind of a mystery story. Ultimately you want to find out what caused the girlfriend to be targeted and prevent that. Takemitchy has the extraordinary advantage of being a 27 year old soul in a 15 year old body, and being able to hop forward and back in time to see how the future changed and change plans accordingly.
Despite being a 27 year old Takemitchy gets tricked and intimidated by 15 year old kids. Despite having the ability to go back and forward in time, he barely uses this ability and the knowledge he gained from the future to solve the mystery and use it to his advantage. Instead he seems to just stay in the past and roll with what happens, knowing what generally is about to happen.
It’s frustrating for the audience that Takemitchy knows less than us, takes more time to realize stuff we realize immediately and consistently makes dumb, irresponsible choices and never learns. During the anime Takemitchy doesn’t change as a character. He stays the same whiny crybaby as he started. He doesn’t become tougher, more alert or more clever.
We connect with him when he does something heroic. This is why the best mini arc in the show is the August 3rd incident. You have a sweet scene with his girlfriend, understand both of them’s motivations and root for Takemitchy and his friends as they desperately try to fight enemy gang members and defend Draken, despite being much weaker. It’s inspiring and justified in the plot. But for most of the other stuff there are simpler solutions.
It’s established again and again that Kisaki Tetta is the big bad behind everything. It doesn’t matter what Takemitchy does, it always ends up with him at the top, killing his loved ones. So why not kill him? Why not go back in time and try to assassinate him? That seems like a way more simple solution than try to become the leader of Toman.
We know why, it’s because it’s an anime about gangs and it’s more interesting to try to become a leader of a gang than just assassinate the bad guy. But it doesn’t make sense. Unless his real goal is to become the gang leader (he doesn’t seem to have those aspirations) it’s hard to believe that 1. He will become the gang leader (because he’s so incompetent) 2. That he could defeat Kisaki in a direct way (because he’s so stupid and weak).
The anime would’ve made a lot more sense if it wasn’t time travel, but instead visions into the future (I.e that’s so raven). Takemitchy already acts and feels like a 15 year old, and he doesn’t know what to do with the information he’s told in the future. He also barely goes back and forward in time to check results. So it would made more sense if he just had visions about Kisaki being bad, or about his girlfriend being killed, and trying to change them. (Note that in that’s so raven she couldn’t change the future, but since one of the themes of Tokyo revengers is Takemitchy changing his fate I’ll allow it).
Another thing that bothers me about him but in a nitpicky way, is that he’s a 27 year old soul and is still very childish. He’s also shown to be attracted to 15 year old girls in the anime. Every anime that does this is weird btw. This is another reason I think we would be better off with visions instead of time travel (then he would’ve been 15). As a 23 year old myself I feel like it would be really weird for me to hang out with 15 year olds. It’s rarely aware that there’s an age and maturity difference, except when his girlfriend and Mikey “feel” that he’s suspiciously mature, which we as an audience never see.
One last note about Takemitchy is that I would like them to ask more questions about whether he wants to stay in the past for selfish reasons. It’s cool that he wants to save his girl, but like I said there’s an easier way to do it. I believe Takemitchy enjoys being a teenager again and that’s part of the reason he mostly stays in the past. Could be an interesting character exploration.
This is long enough so I’ll make another rant about all the other s***, bye for now.

Why you spell his name wrong? U Mikey or sum s***
This is great
Kinda cringe
I read somewhere there aint enough material for a 3rd season tho?
I wasn't a fan of the the creative direction they went with the anime. I read the manga and a highlight is the cinematic qualities portrayed in plenty of the panels
The anime felt too rustic, s***s were constantly bleak and stuck in the period of dusk. The overly warm tone was wack tbh
Manga is 8/10. Anime is 6/10
I also ended up liking the manga quite a bit but there was just something about the anime that worked for me as well
Don’t spoil it for me, but it is amazing how often I see people praise DS on Twitter and then turn around and say “yeah but the ending…”
The ending can’t be that bad bro

The ending IS trash
if it was a small time series it'd be okay but when you have the success DS has you have some standards to maintain and expectations to live up to
but it was just a copout ''it's a wrap, lets call it a day'' type of ending
fun fact about DS: The mangaka said all the breathing forms using fire water etc are there just for visual purposes and what the characters really are doing is regular sword-fighting

Didn't the manga end?

But it wasnt that big when it ended right? The anime made the manga way bigger
But it wasnt that big when it ended right? The anime made the manga way bigger
it ended after s1
it really felt like the author was making s*** up on the spot
while aot's ending for example felt connected and cohesive even if it wasnt what everyone wanted it to be
simple things like that can make or break series

I dont think time travel was needed in TR
it's not like he went into space or into some dystopian world...same setting could be applied in multiple ways given its just gang s*** of the early 2000s
time travel has too many contradictions and it feels like a lazy shortcut to get from point A to B
The only anime I know of that used time travel correctly was steins gate and even that had to make it its main focus to not go off the rails with it....
Takemitchy is a dumbass but over time his stupidity helps the twists work to his development's advantage
And his stupidity, while it provides a solid pure hearted hero type of feel at the same time makes you wonder ''how the f*** can he go through all that s*** and not grow a pair?'' even my goldfish would.
All that being said, this anime/manga succeeds in synergy and makes you stick through the end even if you hate it....and that is what great writers are made of....it's like a thriller book you cant put down or a tv show you hate but still watch just because
my final opinion on TR: it has every reason to be absolute s*** but somehow it's entertaining in its own way.
I read somewhere there aint enough material for a 3rd season tho?
Read some ppl say there’s 10 chapters left and some final chapters were 200 pages so we should be aight.

I read that after finishing S1 and it’s hard to look at the series the same

What in the dookie water was this 11th episode of Pirate Princess
?
What the f*** Adult Swim, why did all of the good writing go into the trash in the last third of the season?
What the f*** even is the point of this show?? Just a crew of pirates escorting some blonde b**** to the garden of eden??

I agree with you and I'll talk about other stuff in this anime including things I liked later
I'll admit I had a falling out with TR near the ending... but the final episodes are great makes you feel like maybe it's worth watching the next season?
Erased had a similar premise and similar issues as TR, but you understood why the character had to go back to the past, he did use his hindsight and maturity to solve problems, and he wasn't stupid (except for one time)
TR already has enough going with the gangs and everyone's favorite character is one of the Toman originals anyway so it could've just been a gang story
I'm reading everywhere theres only material left for like a couple eps
Then I hope they don't stretch it. Hopefully it just means a shorter season

I honestly don't even think the ending to DS was that bad

I feel like they should just milk the s*** out of it and make that into two full length movies
they could crush the buildings if they release those outside of covid
