Evangelion the show was above average, evangelion the movie was a classic. Attack on Titan is likely better as a manga than in anime form, cause the anime did nothing for me. Baccano I haven’t seen. Brotherhood wasn’t enjoyable to me. It is still a quality show, but nothing that I would break my arm to convince someone to watch it.

Those were the first ones off the top of my head, plenty more you can see on a list. When i started watching anime i would look the most recommended on forums like ktt anime/manga thread or myanimelist. Some other anime that come to mind are jojo, psycho pass, vinland saga, Cowboy bebop, trigun

Psycho pass didn’t hit me, Trigun didn’t hit me, Vinland Saga I haven’t seen. I finished Bebop personally. I‘Ve been sour with the state of anime as of late, and been feeling like there’s little innovation or attempts to really stand out or do your own thing. Could be just me.

OK, the problem here is that I don't think any of the shows you listed have those qualities but the way you wrote the description was snob as f*** so I'll throw some snob s*** out there that isn't shounen/ecchi/harem/isekai/power fantasy.

I thought at least psycho pass, trigun, bebop and fma did innovate a lot in the anime industry. Cowboy bebop is one of the most important anime originals for its animation style, use of soundtrack. Fma was imo an aot before aot, psycho pass tackled mental health and law in a way ive never seen in anime. Evangelion i dont even think i need to talk about its influence not only in the anime industry but in pop culture in general. I would suggest other important work but we'd go back to the 70s and 80s with rocky joe, Hokuto no ken, astro boy, devilman which have the issue of having mediocre anime adaptations. But if you want works that stand out these are the ones that defined what it means to create manga and anime.

I guess the difference is, I can watch something, respect what they’ve done for the industry but can still say if i like it or not. I can say, hey, ya’ll should watch Brotherhood, but if they ask me about it, I’d say I didn’t like it, but not because it’s bad, but it didn’t hit my checkmarks of interest.

So I can respect what was done, but can also say I don’t have to enjoy it either.

I’m playing the visual novel, so that’s likely why. The anime didn’t wow me but the visual novel is making me sink more and more time.

Yeah of course, you were talking about how some of the anime ive listed didnt feel like they were innovative or bringing something new to the table so i responded to that with how i feel about those anime's importance. I thought you enjoyed more the works that were bringing something new so i went on that tangent lol

OK, I like snob s*** too. So would you say you prefer thematic anime that focus more on exploring an idea/concept instead of the typical anime that's mostly plot driven and only cares about saying "this happens then this happens then this happens"?

It’s hard in my opinion too. I liked Erased because it felt like a new spin on a light novel and the writing for the adults and kids made it felt like a big journey, something a child wanted to do as a kid to be a hero.

Then there’s Cowboy Bebop for not only the OSt and visual influences it uses, but how they have incredible set pieces, and have characters who each have a story and are together for a short time and neither are aware how much they needed one another, until they’re not together anymore.

Manga’s that intrigued me were, Onani Master Kurosawa, Punpun, King’s beast, Utsuro No Hako To. Zero No Maria and now lately for a visual novel, Fata Morgana

Yeah, I’m much bigger on themes, because I can see how everything tracks together and what the author was going for. Nowadays, authors are saying, this happened, then that happened, and not letting the characters do the story and try to pace it nicely.

Part 5 manga was probably one of my least favorite Jojo parts. But the anime, it's art and aesthetic elevated it to my second favorite anime part. David production really did an amazing job with part 5.

Can anybody recommend an anime that's similar to Wong Kar Wai or Hou Hsiao-hsien in mood and theme? Like a slice of life that isn't overly story based and is more revolved around young adults instead of childhood/teenage years

I'm not TOO familiar with either of their works because the only thing I've watched between the two is Chungking Express.

When I think of Chungking Express the main things that comes to mind is a moody, melancholic piece that just wants to show a snippet of the character's lives with no real end goal. So that's what I'm basing this rec off.

House of Five Leaves for sure would be one I'm confident in reccing. Mushishi is another one that I'm a little less confident about but I'll throw it out there anyways.
