Not black, nor a professional, just wanna show my support to black brothers and sisters!
Kick these white people ass out there!
Job is DESPERATE to find cybersecurity professionals. They’re offering to send people to University of Michigan bootcamp free of charge so they can get help. Salaries starting around 95K compared to the 70k I’m making now.
Soooo conflicted because my role just gave me a pay raise, and although the work is irritating it is stupid easy. I know with cyber security it probably won’t be that way, but the idea of possibly making six figures a year is something I could never imagine. Anybody itt doing cyber security or have any general advice to give?

See what the job entails before you commit. If you like it then id say go for it. If they're willing to send you there for free thats a home run.
Tech consultant
Big 4
My folks still don’t know what that means but they’re happy I’m doing something I like that pays well

I have a interview today and I have to make a decision before the 24th lol. Will definitely be asking questions but thanks for your input.
@JaeRell i have a question, I know you are a social worker, do you have any experience with the accelerated MSW?
I just got accepted into my colleges school of social work, looking ahead at my msw already. Do you think that is a good viable option and the field time that comes with it is appropriate to find a good job out the gate? Thanks

if you're not already an advanced computer user it will be very hard to transition into the field because you'll be learning the basics of computers on top of the technical skills needed to do the job.

Took a Syssec course in college, it’s a looooot of work at some places.
But the work is really interesting and cool (if your into creating and securing networks), knew a guy who did govt work so he was defending against Russian hackers and stuff like that. He sounded like he was in movie sometimes lol. Think he was ~25 when he hit 100k and he was remote living with his parents too, don’t think he moved out until he got a girl lol.
I’d at least take the class to see if how you like it. It’s a dope ass field and the pay will shock you sometimes
If you don’t like it no biggie. I assume you’re young and if you’re making 70k now then the 100k job is coming soon. Just gotta wait on it

I knew a few people who took the accelerated MSW path (advanced standing is what we called it) after getting their BSW. If you're sure on getting a MSW then go for it. It's one less semester you have to take and you'll be saving money.
Some probably worry about not getting enough field experience compared to regular standing students, but I wouldn't worry. You learn so much more on the specific job you're hired for. I still suffer from imposter syndrome regardless of how many of my clients or co-workers praise me.

Just got off the phone with the guy not too long ago, nigga was scaring me lowkey 😂 like he's telling me I can potentially be responsible for millions of dollars in damages in my state because of the role the company needs. So I have to be someone who is willing to take on blame and whatnot.
My current role I be cooking whole ass meals on my shift, gaming, reading, etc. I have so much downtime it feels like I'm robbing the company sometimes. He says that there will be downtime in security but you have to always be alert. Not sure if is worth the extra money considering I have enough money now but I do like the versatility of having the knowledge the certificate would give me. Might do it just to see how it is. Thanks for the input.

I'm fairly new in my cybersec role, so my advice might not be the best.
As far as the opportunity itself, if you have even the slightest interest in cybersecurity I'd def take it especially since it'll be an internal jump for you. There's SO many folk out there with crazy amounts of relevant IT experience experience struggling to land a job in the field; despite the fact that the world has a shortage of roles filled.
Alot of companies be looking for a magical unicorn with 3-5yrs cybersec experience, a master's degree + 5 certs and all for a entry level position.
With that being said, if you haven't already def research the role they're offering, ask questions and go deeper into exactly what your responsibilities will be, what tools you'll have access to (SIEMS would be a good one), additional training (beyond the mentioned boot camp), playbooks, ect. Make note if they're gonna have you doing a mix of everything (red team, blue team, engineering, IR) or focused on 1 or 2.
I had a job interview for a security position where the description basically said "assist the manager with day-to-day tasks", and during the interview he straight up said hes getting killed as a one-man-show and needs help. Role was def not a good fit for me and the interview was bad anyway.
Also had someone on the inside recommend I apply for a security job at his company, and used him as a reference. Got rejected. (Company had the previous mentioned "unicorn" requirements)
The only differences between the 2 companies and the one I'm at now; those 2 were companies with a budget for a security department and the one I'm at now is cybersec through and through from the ground up.
