Treating music/art like sports will never make sense to me and more so then any artform hip hop pushes this mindset.

Art is supposed to be an expression of self, saying my art is "better" than yours is ridiculous when you really think about it.

It could be really dope if we change the culture/conversation from "i think this song/album/movie/tv show is better than..."

    to

"this piece of art resonated with me more than this piece of art because..."

I think it would lead to much healthier dialogue and as we all see on this site and on Twitter the world could use some more healthy dialogue

I understand the fun in debating, I've done the same but a lot of times it just leads to immaturity and at worst people s***ting on other people's taste in art which is just wack

    Just my two cents

EDIT: Y'all have made good points about how competition brings out the best in artists

I guess I meant more so the actual content of the music being competitive rather than competition itself. Also I was speaking moreso to the toxic debate culture amongst hip hop fans where we treat rappers/albums like sports.

Like hearing Summer Walker's manager Justice on the Joe Budden Podcast debate with them between MBDTF vs Blueprint was entertaining but ultimately pointless and got to the point where they were s***ting on/clowning the music they were debating against which is just wack to me

The Beattles and Beach Boys pushed each other to make their best music but they didn't s*** on each other in their actual songs

EDIT2: Stop trying to sound like some hip hop elitist by saying " durr HIp hoP hAs ALwaYs been competitive".

That's 🧢, hip hop started out as party music.

the skill aspect is competitive, the music itself is subjective. but no one knows what theyre arguing about anyways.

I thought about going into how hip hop/black culture's (black men especially) competitive nature likely stems from how we were pitted against each other in slavery but I wanted to keep the thread light

it's a marketing ploy to cultivate a stimulus in their sales by having their fanbases support their respective side in the beef. you can often see people trying to boost stream numbers by looping songs 24/7 to move a song up the charts.

Look at this c***tryna strip hip-hop of its culture

It's not like it's toxic s*** has always been used in a healthy way

Hip-hop is so dominant and distinct because of its competitive nature

And in a way it's black expression traditionally seen in sports put into music which is pretty damn cool and encourages niggas to keep they game up

i feel that and i get how rapping is a bit different from other artforms because of the physical aspect of rap can be considered a sport but even then its still subjective

Someone may think Em is the best rapper cuz of his use of words/how fast he raps etc etc but then someone else can make the case for Biggie because of his flawless flow so even in the act of rapping its still subjective and about what resonates with your ear

Sports really the only thing i can think of where you can decisively say one person's performance is better than another person's performance

No the competitive nature is a part of the game. It's a part of any game really. Good actors are gonna take up good roles. You gotta compete to make it to the top.

If you don't like competition then you should just never go outside and stay behind your keyboards.
