I consider american blacks to be African american and I say this for 3 reasons.
1) Culturally: American Blacks Are pretty westernized and only have slight influences from their west African heritage aside from that they are very american in culture. American Blacks have also made huge cultural advancements that distinguish them from Africans (blues, jazz, hip hop, dance, hair styling)
2) Genetically : American Blacks tend to be pretty admixed, On average they are 20% white
3) Genetically 2 : African Americans cannot trace their ancestry to one ethnic group in Africa because they are a mix of a VERY diverse group of people that were shipped to the america's.

Regardless of where youre technically descended from from Africa youre still black

South Africans dont count

Culturally we always lived in black cities etc, people thought i was AS until theyd see my name so ye i feel pretty african american but i do acknowledge my ancestors never went thru the hardships and racism

well the biggest problem i have wit the term african american (as a white man lol) is that immigrants or something wouldn’t necessarily be “african american” to any degree worth quantifying (or just bc they are in america) like to my knowledge they don’t say “african brit” or whatever idk it just sounds weird to me and is never really used to solely refer to - the decendants of former slaves in america - but rather as a “PC” term for black ppl as a whole, by americans

well you say us blacks wouldnt know, but im caribbean. i grew up with a lotta west indian type people in brooklyn. also a lotta black americans. we were all black americans but there were differences. so i would identify a more specific culture.
so i wouldnt necessarily call myself an african american
