@op you want a separate chart for sales and streams or something?

Uh YES. If streams are doing very well and sales are not don’t combine them together to give a false sense of success... why is that so hard to comprehend? Then I got idiots over here telling me “but streams generate money” HUH??? what are y’all talking about?

How is it a false sense of success lmao

The artist/label are making the equivalent of x album sales

They didn’t pick some random number for what’s an equivalent

We also already have both streaming charts and pure sales charts that exist separately so feel free to use those OP

You’re an idiot you know streams make money right

I think op just has a problem using the world "sold" when it's really "sold AND streams combined"

I kinda get what you're saying op, but you should've been a bit clearer in your post, if that's what you meant.

No I shouldn’t have it’s very clear wtf I’m saying if you actually read it properly. People just don’t like to think for themselves/ explore new ideas. If budden says this, everybody gets it, but I say it and “they lose brain cells “

Billboard do both but they’re paywalled

Rolling Stone and HDD both combine for chart placement but give figures for sales and streams

And I think HDD have a separated pure sales chart as well

Because it accurately reflects the total consumption of that album?

It sounds like op is asking “how do you quantify x amount of cents = a stream” but for some reason he didn’t just say that

No it doesn’t. 1500 streams equal one album is not the same no matter how U slice it. From the consumer standpoint I mean.

They pay 10 or 20 a month to hear unlimited albums. Not for each album.

On top of that 1500 streams of ONE SONG will count towards ALBUM sales. That doesn’t make sense.

  • Sep 26, 2020

Don’t start this with me. Don’t try and make me look dumb because you will lose in the end I promise. Stop sucking industry d*** and think for yourself

People don’t consume their music by buying albums anymore so they came up with a figure that converts streams to sales based on equivalent revenue

Its nothing to do with ego lmao its called adjusting to new circumstances

    It IS the same
Your average consumer never contributes a single album worth of streams to one album

That’s why Spotify can make profit

It’s still album consumption lol you act like people didn’t buy albums that had a single they liked back in the day

What does profit have to do with this? Why did u mention profit?

The profit will be the same regardless of the SPS. SPS is just a formula it’s just a measurement

I get what you're saying but I also understand from the other side.

You: pure sales are in the tank. we need to accept it. have a separate charts so people know who actually sold the most in sales and who streamed the most in streams

Billboard/KTT whose faves have mainly streaming numbers: Pure sales are in the tank so let's factor in streaming since it's the main source of consumption now. Since 1500 streams = $10.49, the same price as the average album sale, we factor those streams into the total units figure and we have equivalent album units.

They're trying to keep it equal cuz there still are a few artists who have big pure sales, but most nowadays are streams. If streaming never came into play, there would be more pure sales, but it would still have been a big decline. Album sales were on decline in 2001-2003, went up in 04, then went back down again until I think Adele with 21, then down again and kinda stayed there.

They CAME UP with a figure that’s firstly prone to error and second of all their profit will be the same regardless of how they report on streams and sales. Why do they need to come up with a new sales figure that doesn’t actually reflect the amount of units sold?
If nobody is buying albums anymore and everyone is streaming shouldn’t there not be a SPS chart cos that just makes the artist sound like they’re doing more numbers than they are

Just stick with reporting Streaming numbers then.
