It makes sense though since he wasn't as well-known & many folks (even big fans) don't tend to go back & check out full discographies. There's probably Kendrick fans who've never played Section.80 or Drake fans who never even played So Far Gone

I remember when the Jay-Z fan on here admitted they never listened to Reasonable Doubt before

but that’s a little different, that’s an official Jay-Z album, at that point you just not doing the bare minimum as a fan of artist you said you a fan of lol

I could understand a nigga never having heard of “The S Carter Collection” but yea, idk. I say this cause ima a Gucci stan, and there’s no way I’d be able to properly rate 125+ mixtapes fairly next to someone lmfao, but the nigga has a more discernible official album number. I can definitely tell you the classic mixtapes and eras, but outside of that, how ima rate that fairly against someone who is a legend who didn’t do mixtapes? that’s just how I view it lmao. ima just use Wop albums, which are equally as strong.

like Jay has 13 albums and Gucci has 17, I could easily see someone missing their mixtapes in between all that and rating them off their albums as these were promoted releases lmao

thinking back to other genres though i absolutely dont count these bands f***ing seven inches and two song eps in my discography rankings. dont care how good they are if its like 13 mins of music in total this is a fan-exclusive discussion. always found it funny

Atp a mixtape basically means a looser full length release
(Or an album but the label is trying to screw you over contract wise)

Would be dope if some of the top rappers came with some rapper over other's beats stuff

Tyler should do it, Kendrick should, Hov if he really bout that life
I guess that gets muddier with modern trap, e.g. im not sure if we'd be as fussed to hear Young Thug do his version of Evil jordan

Thug on Like Weezy would be tough but alas, we live in the current era of rap

I swear the nigga had a reasonable doubt avi too & he admitted he hadn't even played it

It can be difficult with them sprawling discographies no doubt
I would hope that folks would at least check out the required listening sort of stuff or all the albums etc. But we both know that we are holding folks to a standard that most of them won't meet
I've spoken to people who have said Coonye is their favourite artist but they won't go back to listen to TCD because it's too old, some goofy mfers

Think about the concerts you've been to & the sizeable chunk of folks who only know a couple of the songs but still dropped $250 despite not even know that OutKast has two members

went to Utopia and was surrounded by so many white kids who were only waiting on Sicko Mode

meanwhile me and one of the white dudes girls is screaming every song word for word I didn’t want to make him feel bad and vibe with her, but damn she was going in lmaooo

nigga just standing there like until sicko mode came on at the END of the show lmfaooo

I really hate that goofy s*** about not listening to old albums. Now that to me is not real hiphop fan because you don’t even care about doing the science and finding out why bro is so heralded so you can maybe add something to the conversation instead of circling the same mainstream bullshit. it’s like you’re purposely limiting yourself from how captivating this entire experience could be or the talk we could have

That actually makes sense tho, people who pull out the “🤓it’s a mixtape actually” in like a best album/project/discog thread are still dumb as rocks

  • Nov 12, 2025

Candidly even if it’s an artist I’m really into I tend to only include the mixtapes I like & and don’t consider the ones I’m iffy on. in my mind that’s why the distinction exists if we’re talking modern mixtapes. old school mixtapes are a different sort of task, so I categorize that as extended discography

  • Nov 12, 2025

    Of course the f***

  • 100% it’s a body of work

If im not allowed to include Sorry 4 the Wait or Dedication 4 I will be fighting whoever said that

How I feel about more about nothing

  • Nov 12, 2025

Depends on the seriousness of the mixtape both in how artist presented it and how the public anticipated and received it. For example, the Wayne tapes absolutely because of how he treated them and how the public treated them.

If an artist is bullshitting with mixtapes and it’s clear they are, then I think it’s fine to remove them from the critical evaluation.

  • Nov 12, 2025

I usually separate albums and mixtapes when I'm rating a discog, even commercial ones. But of course it's "included" when evaluating one's entire body of work.

I can tell by the way most people talk about Wayne that they don’t include his mixtapes

    was gonna say this lol

  • Nov 12, 2025

imo i treat mixtapes that are original music differently from if it’s a tape of mostly remixes just cuz i think their goals are different from each other

Who said we can't include Wayne tapes?

The whole concept of rating discography is weird anyway (mainly the way its weaponized)

There's a lot of hip hop out there
Obviously it would be nice but maybe they haven't heard many/any of them (but obviously they shouldn't dictate the objective rules on something they don't have an understanding of, that'd be like letting privileged multi millionaires lead governments... )

I'm sure there's folks who would swear by Wayne mixtapes who've never listened 100s of classic hip hop albums, we've all got catching up to do

Im not saying you have to KNOW all the classic mixtapes but if you have some weird album elitism you dont like hiphop.

  • Nov 12, 2025

As long as they've been released with artist's permission, yeah.
