On Magic, Nas raps the following lyrics:
“No comparison, we more solid than they are
Me and Hit-Boy, they say we like the new Gang Starr”

It goes without saying that these lyrics have caused a lot of ruckus in the hip-hop world. Do you think Nas & Hitboy are as good as Gang Starr, or even better?

    A discography comparison:
    Nas & Hit Boy:
    King’s Dead
    King’s Dead 2
    Magic

    Gang Starr:
    Step In The Arena
    Daily Operation
    Hard To Earn
    Moment Of Truth
    The Ownerz

I personally have to give it to Gang Starr and it's not close, but I'm curious to hear what the rest of you think.

Nas could probably make all these projects with any producers. I don't see King's Disease I and II as being essential bc of the beats, respectfully, its bc Nas is sharp with the pen. DJ Premier was a more essential part of the albums imo. You get a real feel for his presence on the songs
even though they make good albums I don't see these as separate from Nas' discography. Doesn't feel like they're a group. But maybe it's just because Nas has name recognition and Hit boy has a very versatile sound. and we don't see their process

It's such a miss that DJ Premier didn't have a full collab album with one of the big dogs of the 90's (Nas, Jay, or BIG)

Guru is still one of the greatest ever tho

Hit boy is a great producer but he doesn't have a signature sound and that's important if you want to be one of the greatest producers ever in terms of a legacy. what would a "hit-boy type beat" sound like if you thought one up?
there's a reason that decades later, Drake will say "Stack of C-notes, get all you niggas scratched like Preemo"

Hit Boy's greatness is his versatility

He is like the only one capable of making boom bap, smooth R&B s*** and trap at the highest level

Drake also says ‘i should prolly sign to hit boy cause I got all the hits boy’
Hit boys signature sound is hit songs, not a gimmick like scratching
I’m sorry but if I had to remove either Premo songs or Hit Boy songs from my library, it’s an easy pick for me
    Probably also a generational thing

    that's facts

but in 20 years that's gonna be hard to remember.
that's probably why he's working with Nas and Big Sean so heavily on albums. a lot of people have hits. a lot of producers make boom bap album cuts. but to work on a project like King's Disease was a special moment for him. its not even like I'm s***ting on him, he's someone anyone could admire/learn form but he for someone who made one of Kanye's biggest hits, he just didn't make as heavy of a mark on the game until fairly recently imo

At least it makes an interesting story that he had early 2010's mainstream hits, was blackballed from the industry for a few years and then made a comeback by helping Nas kickstart what he himself considers "his second career"

On KD1 and 2 he made Nas branch out and take artistic risks that actually worked and paid off

Then on Magic he definitely heard the critics and learned how to make his sound more dirty and raw, that classic "Nas sound"

He is good at studying the greats and taking notes

I think he's still getting better and we haven't seen the best of him yet

And there's already a potential classic under his belt (Magic)

But yeah unlike the GOATs he doesn't have a signature sound
