Was he polite? I think he just didn't talk

he didn't say anything rude, so i figured he'd be the polite type :maulshrug:

It works best when the polite villain has brutal henchmen

I figured he was the menacing type.

If anyone was polite it was Palpatine.

That’s one element but they allow him to have his own personality and impact on every scene he shares and even make him feel less generic by the end when he decides to act outside of the confines of his role when he tries to find a way to get out of his current situation. It makes him feel like more of a genuine character rather than your typical bad guy

    Yup I agree 100%

James Bond movies always have polite villains I’m sure Rami Malek will be the same

Yeah. Maul was just an extension of Palpatine's will like Vader would be. Palpatine did the talking, Maul did the "aggressive negotiations."

Palpatine was polite as Chancellor. Just so creepy. And the whole father figure to Anakin by calling him " son" in ROTS and when he smiles all sympathetically after saying "Know the power of the dark side, the power to save Padme"

The dude in Oldboy was pretty polite

    johan from monster

his politeness made him pretty damn terrifying

  • Jun 16, 2021

Xanatos from Gargoyles came to mind

But sometimes I just need that somewhat frantic brutality. I don't think I would've enjoyed Steppenwolf the way I did if he was polite. He was a savage partly out of desperation. but if Xanatos was more aggressive and less of a gentleman I wouldn't like that either. But maybe the more polite villain has more staying power very interesting

    The gentle criminal arc horrible

But the Hisikai mafia arc before that was the best one

    SOul AMAZIN

    yes

griffith is maybe the best example, he was likable, intelligent, you could emphasize with him based on his backstory, and even the hero respected and admired him for most of the show. When he finally enacted his dream and it was so dark that was amazing

Honestly one of the best villains I've ever seen depicted in any form of media. Like you mentioned his official heel turn is even more disturbing considering how much of a likable character he is up until that point.
