It's relative to the era. Most big hip-hop hits followed the same formula of a rapper with an r&b artist on the hook. Or you'd have the opposite and an r&b song with a rapper with a verse at the end. That's like 75% of hip-hop radio back then. At the time Drake was the dude that was seen as being able to do both competently. Yeah rappers sang before Drake. And some singers dipped their toes into rapping. Drake was the first one that really blurred the lines between being an r&b artist or a rapper at a time when they were pretty clearly drawn though
