you don't have to like his new music but from a songwriting perspective he's inarguably improved leaps and bounds since trilogy. some of the songs on those tapes are literally just him moaning aimlessly over ambient beats and are overly reliant on atmosphere and samples (mostly on HOB and thursday, by EOS he was starting to carve out his niche as a songwriter). it's just a bold faced lie to say he "refuses" to be great, he's always getting better, just not in the way you want him to.

This is hilarious cause when Kiss Land cane out people said it was a bad attempt at Pop. The Weeknd talks about the same s*** in the same way the production just changed. It’s annoying how art opinions are just regurgitating others nowadays cause you def said this just cause it’s popular to say
