Maybe not sales, but people are more likely to listen to an album than a mixtape. Like I've spoken to people who haven't listened to The Warm Up, Friday Night Lights, Overly Dedicated. Probably a lot of people out there who never heard Faces until it dropped on streaming recently. So if an artist can deal with the pressure of the world's eyes on them and still drop a project that's regarded as a classic, it's more highly regarded than doing it on a mixtape
And J Cole is a good example of how it affects the output of the artist. FNL didn't need to have a Work Out. And between FNL and CW:TSS, one of them is universally considered better
That’s wild
The water gets muddy now a days when tapes like Barter 6 go straight to streaming cause I’d say Thug a legend more for his mixtape career more than his albums
People wouldn’t even understand Fabolous appeal if they only heard his albums smh

The lines are blurred these days to the point where they're basically non-existent. Most of my examples are from the early stages in an artist's career, so I'm not sure how true it holds for mixtapes an artist drops when they're already established like More Life

An era of label micromanagement where studio albums were watered down to hell
those last 2 are albums
Iyrtitl isn't an album because Drake and the label didn't promote it like one. You can argue about whether it's a mixtape, project, etc but coming in between the build ups to TC, NWTS and Views, there's a clear difference
A big what if in hip-hop if it dropped 2012
Still sounds fresh to this day. Timeless!
Absolutely
That’s another classic album that would be an undisputed classic if it had the major label rollout
You almost wanna give that to Kush and OJ and More About Nothing too
Need that on Vinyl
@Kanye stop being a b**** and clear the samples
one of the rare artists where every project could be argued is their best
EXCEPT for their last one is my honest opinion. Everyone was out of this world except the last one. I think they were veering to pop heavily in it, idk, was missing something
Lost Tapes
