An artist who constantly tries to create something new and fresh, pushing boundaries and never does the same thing twice creatively, the quality is always there for the most part, but is also often very polarising by definition

    Or

An artist who “stays in their lane”, experiments rarely and their sound stays somewhat “consistent” but the quality is mostly always there but they may also drop a dud every now and then

Do you care about “experimenting” at all?

Is the music being good the only factor you care for?

I'm not sure which of these Tyler would fall into. He has no real "lane", he is always making something fresh but does it effortlessly, which leads to him creating new things.

I guess my answer would be an artist who isn't aimlessly recreating the wheel at every opportunity and being different just for the sake of being different, but one who are naturally explorative with their sound.

Nothing wrong with an artist who stays in their lane and just sticks to refining themselves. RXK Nephew and Pap are the best developing examples of that. The only thing about consistency is you inevitably peak at some point and risk going downhill if you don't know how to switch things up.

as long as they make great projects consistently im good with either of these options

I appreciate when an artist tries to experiment but I’m also very satisfied with consistency. If you keep dropping music I enjoy I’m good with that. I’ll acknowledge a dud when I see a dud.

Experimenting doesn’t always work out and if it sucks I’ll say so

Not even close to true. You can use reference points to elevate the music. Burrial is the best example of this

An artist being their raw self. I rather an artist just be innovative because thats who they just are.

I don’t care for an artist being experimental just for the sake of it. The best ones doing that usually don’t have to force it.

  • Good music

All that innovation and boundary pushing whatever is for people use artists as a template for thier personality I.e Kanye

I’m drawn to “experimental” music most of the time. That doesn’t mean you have to do some next level pushing s*** to make good music. If it sounds good it sounds good but my ear likes it when I hear something daring, bold, and passionate

All I want to say is Rx Nephew is the most true to self rapper out there right now and also experiments in the aspect that he uses a wide range of beat types and the way he raps is so unhinged.

Like you somewhat have an idea of what a Neph song is but then again every time I click a new song I could be getting a new dance track, a 70’s sample loop, a Memphis or west coast beat…..

Maybe next time he’ll rap on a Journey sample I just don’t know
