If I read this back when you wrote it, I would be more partial to China and their supposed realpolitik. However, their "impotence", to put it very lightly, regarding assisting Cuba right now, has soured me to their capitalist reforms and Dengism. China is pretty much just a European social democracy with less civil liberties but also without the militarism. It's a better model for organizing a country/economy than the US and the vast majority of the west in general, but it's not really a socialist country anymore, and probably hasn't been since like 1982. I don't know that they're enemies to socialism, but they're not allies.

Get started by going to local protests that have any kind of socialist representation there, even if it's the DSA. This is where you can begin to meet irl socialists and form a network of aspiring revolutionaries.

Stalin is just one guy though, and a lot of what we "know" about him is disinformation or egregiously embellished. But even under Stalin the Soviet Union saw unprecedented economic/industrial growth despite being up against arguably the worst opposition of any country in history. Their own "allies" in WWII were out to get them on top of the maniacal Axis powers.

Capitalism furthermore has a much more extensive, and more brutal, track record of ethnic discrimination, chief among them being the Holocaust, which the USSR under Stalin played a decisive role in ending. History is ugly unfortunately, but the revolution that feeds the children gets my support.

They're not lying as much as they're misunderstanding and/or having lofty faith in China's alleged path towards socialist development. But I think most support for China and their "socialism" is out of desperation and fear.

You're confusing the level of material development built from capitalist society, with the mode of production itself.

There's nothing wrong with enjoying the material standard of living afforded to the American "middle class", but the issue is how we arrived to that standard of living. But socialism can, eventually, produce close to the material standard of living for working people in the US as capitalism presently does, but without the instability and periodic crises.

What I was trying to point out is that socialism hasn't, yet, produce a truly affluent society. But this is because the least-equipped countries in the world have historically taken the mantle to build socialism, and are up against unyielding opposition from the strongest, most developed countries in human history. If we stopped attacking these countries ceaselessly, they could provide a legitimately affluent way of life for working people. Not luxurious, but comfortable and enjoyable, like an upper middle class urban lifestyle. We don't need to view pursuing socialism as settling for an ascetic lifestyle. The less-than-ideal living conditions of some socialist countries (and they are very much only slightly less-than-ideal, at worst, when they're not at war) is a byproduct of trying to survive in a globalized capitalist system, not a feature of socialist construction itself.
