  • Jan 5, 2020

My first interaction with Hip-Hop was through 50 (GRODT) & Kanye (Graduation), heard them for the first time when I was like 8
Then started to listen to it actively when I was 14

Oh, yes; "Sign O' the Times," "Camille," "Dream Factory," & the original variant of "Crystal Ball..." those were the times too, man, I must admit, goddamn. & "Diamonds and Pearls..." with Rosie, Tony (albeit not nearly adored as much as Ms. Gaines for reasons), The Steeles, Kirky J., & even some Michael & Sonny... "Cream," "Horny Pony," "Schoolyard," "Strollin'," "Walk Don't Walk," "Willing and Able," etc... it's a hell of an underrated era as well, for sure!

Moreover, as of late, I've been noticing way more praise for "Batman" than, let's say, five years ago... therefore, it seems like the general public has finally been appreciating the project, just like they should have when they'd put the album out, to be frank. Also, undoubtedly, my favourite tunes on the project are "Electric Chair," "The Future," "Scandalous," "Trust," "Vicki Waiting," & its B-Sides: "Feel U Up" & "I Love U in Me."

Batman is such an underrated album! I haven't even seen the movie yet, which i really should make time to do so.

I have to admit, I often look over the post-Graffiti Bridge Prince albums, besides Diamonds and Pearls (Cream and the title track are crazy good!) and most singles. My mom was a big Prince fan, but only owned the 1979 to 1990 LPs.

Since you are so well versed in 90's Prince, do you suggest I just dive into the rest of his discog in order or are their any albums I should listen to first?

Oh, to be candid, I have not had time to watch "Batman" either. Peradventure, though, I ought to do so as well! We will see. Also, I would like to point out that "Batman" — the Prince's album – of course – is such a grower; when I had listened to the project for the first time, I did not adore it nearly as much as I do now; same with "Come," for instance, which, to be frank, has been aging even more magnificently than the soundtrack, in fact; from my point of view at least.

Well, anyhow, so when it comes to the post-"Diamonds and Pearls" discography, I would, in point of fact, diving into it chronologically, including all the unreleased, albeit leaked tunes if I were you anyway. Moreover, I can already promise you that it will be an indescribably powerful journey, consistently filled with masterful compositions, although certainly not the undemanding one either, I would say, especially, the just-mentioned "Come" fits into this kind-of narrative in my opinion. Nevertheless, I would additionally treat all the '93 songs from: "Come," "The Gold Experience," & partially "Chaos and Disorder" & "Crystal Ball" as one body of work forasmuch as, before they were all put out by his "incredibly wondrous" record label, Warner Bros. Records, The Artist had wanted to release the '93 variant of "The Dawn," his "magnum opus," as described by himself, whose tracklist was probably "way too long" for the label executives since, at the time, it contained about thirty tracks in total (sic!).

By the way, I will, for sure, republish the official tracklist on the forums whenever I stumble upon it. Until then, howbeit:

This is all really great! Thank you for all of the recommendations! This weekend I will start diving in chronologically after Diamonds and Pearls.

By the end of 2020 I am also hoping to finish my Prince LP collection. So far I have Prince, Dirty Mind, Controversy, 1999, Purple Rain, Around the World In A Day, Sign O' The Times and Lovesexy

Oh, you are very welcome, & well, I thoroughly hope that you will, in point of fact, enjoy what you will be hearing for the first time technically, I suppose! Furthermore, when I had gotten into Prince's discography in full, I started spinning his protégées' albums, & I must admit that Mayte's, unfortunately, only studio album, entitled: "Child of the Sun," has intrigued me the most out of them all. Therefore, naturally, at this point, I have listened to it way more than any of those other projects, LOL. However, I frankly assume it is because of the fact that I genuinely adore the entire era this much... oh, well, somewhat freaky, haha.
By the way, have you, by any chance, purchased yourself a copy of the super deluxe edition of "1999" yet? I would, in fact, sincerely recommend buying it if you have not done so yet, & moreover, the fact is that I am also still obtaining the "missing" bodies of work of Prince / The Artist since his discography is that excessive! Albeit I still do believe that I will finally have them all someday regardless. Besides, ultimately, I do adore the fact that you have ALMOST decided to pick up the bodies of work in order (forasmuch as you still have not got "For You" in your collection, is that right? Please let me know whether I am right or not!)
    Until then, though, traditionally:

You're correct! I do not have "For You" yet. My mom got me into Prince and she had "Purple Rain" (of course), "Sign O' The Times", "1999" and "Prince" in her collection. I fell in love with "Purple Rain" (movie and album), then went back to "Prince" and started collecting from there, so I missed "For You" on my first record store splurge!

I have the original "1999". I decided to pick up the original first and after I collect the full Prince discog I was going to obtain all deluxe editions. I also need to first get a job so I can afford all of the LPs I want to buy! Nothing is more enjoyable than placing a needle down on a record you have never heard before.

I am also a Kanye, D'angelo and Outkast stan so I had to collect all of their cds and vinyls before I tried to tackle the enormous discography that is Prince

After that I went into a real rap phase sort of

I went and listen to both kendrick and Coles whole discography first and then views then I saw a youtube recommend video of chance freestyling(I didnt like him at the time but I still clicked on it) one of the beats he Freestyle over was through the wire

I found out where it came from and I listen to college dropout, that was my first kanye album always heard his music but I didnt really connect with him until then. That's when I started to search for albums that people consider classics and listen to them like blueprint, illmatic, miseducation, 36 chambers, aquemini.

I basically worked my way from the 90s to the late 2010s

That is great! Starting with the College Dropout is perfect! I feel like everyone has that phase were they watch Sway freestyles all night...i did at least!

I went through my 90's hip hop phase as well, then I landed on Ye and Outkast as my favorite hip hop artists. I don't listen to rap exclusively anymore, but I had a phase when rap was the only genre I would listen to!
