    Atlantic records the wackest label

    WESLEY THE GREAT

    It was partially Jays fault.

Jay was gonna take a position at Atlantic and persuaded Lupe to sign under him with Atlantic but ended up going to Def Jam instead and the rest is history.

While I agree they didnt help, all media from that time makes it seem like it was kinda inevitable. Lupe was getting an ego, Chill was gone, he had some sort of fallout with the Gemstones guy and Soundtrakk. That Matthew Santos song and I'm Beaming didn't catch on like Dumb it Down did. Feels like he probably wouldn't have been able to follow The Cool regardless.

This is from a former Lupe stan. I still admirably believe that if album 3 went different he'd be in a difference space, but they let him drop an album with a black cover and any songs he wanted years later and he still fumbled it. F&L/The Cool still both in top 20 hiphop albums ever tho

Lupe got f***ed but I don’t see why some people act like dude was a complete failure, he had a good career all things considered

Three gold albums, 5 or so hit songs, a Grammy, name recognition, and he influenced a good number of rappers, made good investments, and just chills now, what’s wrong with that? Honestly

Honestly tho, even with the pop music pressure, Lupe could still make really good pop music like with The Show Goes On

That's when he messed up for me. Songs like THat

  • May 30, 2021

He seems to be doing pretty alright. Independent, making the music he wants and making money off it, going on tours whenever and wherever he pleases, multiple webshows and documentaries about topics he cares about. He's his own man.

Went to a Lupe show back in 2019 and I know Lupe's catalog, but the amount of great tracks he has for concerts that weren't just from Lasers still surprised me.

Like if there was ever gonna be a Verzuz for backpack rappers Lupe really might just sweep most of his competition

They barely even promoted it or pressed CDs for it
I mean, CDs were a dying medium even for 2015, but still

Cds were still good in 2015, they undershipped it like crazy. Had to order one from germany (i live in netherlands)
