It probably boils down to something like this: the "hallucigenia" represents a god, responsible for creating all life on earth (Im pretty sure isayama even refers to it as the source of all living matter). This divine quality explains the titan powers. It slept in darkness for ages, until a human accidentaly made contact, and as a consequence the course of history was altered. As for it showing a desire to attach itself to a host, it can easily be explained as a survival instinct.
