  • With all the fanfare surrounding the Jay freestyle I’m starting to see that our conversations within the artform aren’t spearheaded by hip hop fans fr..

Most of the general critiques and detractors on social media didn’t really say anything about the actual content.. you’d get ‘mid’ trash’ (which tells me you’re just trolling because you can’t either articulate why you didn’t like it.. )

No discussions about the bars, references technique acumen, interpretive wit etc. most of the discourse was about his appearance lol

A got me to thinking that lyrical assassins like Jay must be like ppl with 20/20 vision reading braille.. I noticed the disconnect when ppl couldn’t even make out the clear shots/jabs and only able to comment on the more surface bars I.E - ‘cost a b to say mind’ on some ohhh that’s Beyoncé lol

Not only were some of these line genuinely hilarious and entertaining, but the schemes on the backhand were incredible

It wasn’t the best thing ever, but seeing a 56 year old outbarring mfs 20 years younger than him still is nothing to scoff at.. I realized, Bush’s ‘No child left Behind’ failed us.. lol

    What gives ?

Being 56 and out barring people younger shouldn’t be that surprising tbh
Lyricism and writing is something that can really grow with time, it’s not like a physical sport where you have a clearly defined peak.
People just don’t value it the same way bc half the people on the hip hop charts can’t really rap. And that’s just on a pure technical aspect, not even when you talk about writing their own lyrics

never thought about it like that tbh .. I think of aging performing artists with my singer brain.. it gets hard to sing in the upper extremities with the same ease/freedkm .. start getting a lil sluggish with the agility and runs, certain limitations start to manifest after 40 for most vocal fachs

I guess this limits emcees a lot less, due to there being a different focus

  • the stannification of hip-hop is what happened

we’re gonna look back in a couple of years with a lot of cringing

Meh.. I’m not on social media often.. I just got off my one week fast that I take every month, so I’m a lil late to reacting to everything lol
A few posts a couple times a year tbh (usually when there’s a lil stir) lol

I just came back from a training for verbal assessments I will have to administer to teens...and all I could think of was this s*** needs to be dumbed down...they aren't going to understand this without me clarifying everything

There's a point to be made in the fact none of the best rappers have started in the last 10 years.

most online hip hop discourse is conducted by people who have zero respect for hip hop or its history to begin with. It’s nothing more than a social signifier to them.

Sure there’s always been the inter generational jabs and whatnot but that was largely premised on (mostly) healthy competition. Where we’re at now is just outright disrespect and disdain for the culture as a whole
