It’s a topic of debate for people
He definitely makes some money off residuals and off samples - now that Care Package is streaming
His XL advance was likely fairly sizable and they’ve kept him on the roster so he’s doing well on that front
Paul Institute was initially funded by this guy Muz Azar who’s apparently a tech billionaire and basically gave them a ton of funding to do their thing
But it seems like there might have been legal issues that arose and he’s no longer credited as being involved
So at this point I really don’t know. They have enough money that their artists can work full-time on music and quit their jobs and are obviously expanding Paul Institute still w new artists so they must be getting money somewhere
They do have a deal with Adidas though that might be part of it

Also, when Jai first signed with XL him and Anup opened a holdings group shortly after with 90,000 British sterling in it, so many assumed that was his advance from XL.

@safe good read and history, but actual genuine question, do you know what Jai Paul does to make money? Did Jasmine/BTSTU really make enough money he can live off of residuals? He doesn't do any guest production like his brother does and I doubt XL is giving him infinite funding, but he seems to have enough money to do whatever he wants like fund the Paul Institute

To add onto what @safe said, Jai is much more than just a music artist. He's a visual designer also, and does side work for all types of projects all throughout the media industry. He's well connected.

do you have any more details on this?

I know he does some of the designs for covers/website/merch but not to the extent that i'd think of him as a proper 'visual designer'

i remember ak said he did fine arts at uni so i'd love to see some stuff from that outside his music related work if theres anything out there

The Internet & How it Helped to Cultivate Jai Paul's LegacyA Brief History

In 2007 Jai Paul, 19 years old at the time and living in Rayner’s Lane, London wrote and produced a song called Back To Save The Universe. The demo took him about an hour to make and he uploaded it onto his myspace. He didn’t care to show anyone or to promote it. He just liked making music.

A screenshot of Jai Paul’s Myspace circa 2010. Note his description of himself

3 years later, by chance someone found the song and shared it onto their blog. The song grew like wildfire and a bidding war erupted. Jai chose not to sign with the major labels promising him supeom, instead choosing to sign with a small independent British label XL Recordings. He released an adjusted version of BTSTU with the label and despite rumors circulating of a debut album titled Bait Ones, it wasn’t until 2 years after signing that he released his second single, a song called Jasmine (Demo) onto Soundcloud. The song exploded getting half a million plays in just two days. Pitchfork named it Best New Track just an hour after release and NY Times described it as prince-esque.

In 2013, on the 13th April with no warning an album was uploaded to Jai Paul’s bandcamp. The album was self-titled and contained no track names. Tracks were unstable, glitchy and often cut short. The next day Jai tweeted.

Jai’s first and only tweet – until June 2019

    A statement never followed.

It was 6 years before Jai Paul’s name appeared on music again – contributing production and backing vocals to his own label’s artist’s debut single Fabiana Palladino’s Mystery. While A.K. Paul (Jai’s brother) started to become more prolific in the years of Jai’s disappearance, rumors constantly circulated about Jai, the nature of the album release and whether he would ever return.

On June 2 2019, Jai tweeted for the second time ever. He directed fans to a new website where he had officially released the leaked album. The purchase for the album included a statement. It described how Jai had been emotionally destroyed by the leak and it had taken years of therapy and reclusiveness to start making music again. That music came in the form of two new singles ‘Do You Love Her Now’ and ‘He’. The 500 copies of the vinyl sold out in minutes and the vinyl initially listed for £7 now resells on ebay for over £200.

Do You Love Her Now was named Best New Track by Pitchfork. A week later the other single ‘He’ was named Best New Track. Jai is currently 4/4 on Best New Tracks for official singles
