I think cregger makes fun one time watches. He clearly loves the immediate thrills and tensions found in Craven and Carpenters work but he never understood the deeper substance in their works that made those thrills land the way they did. Weapons has the immediate thrills that you latch onto but as a story about community, isolation, fearmongering, loss of innocence (themes Cregger is clearly interested in with the film), it comes up extremely short. You get very little in the way of the substance in the film because it’s far more interested in its surface level shifted perspective storytelling to reply same plot beats to you but to give you a different perspective to it all to land on what is a very predictable and simple story with very little underneath its skin.
Damn, perfect score from the NYT.
Hoping my boy Brian Tallerico from RogerEbert loves it, he’s a huge RE fan and loved Cregger’s previous two (and is probably the reviewer I’ve come across who most shares my tastes in movies).
Tonight and primetime next week . I can already tell the gamer discourse on this one will be insane
Gonna guess that the first aid thing he's carrying to deliver is a cure (or at least maybe it supposed to be) for the T-Virus. Idk but I think that's going to be important at the end. Reviews got me excited asf for this man. Can't wait to see all the creature designs and how much the trailers left out
Elden ring , gears of war and death stranding the true video game movie test to me
Elden Ring is gonna be fascinating to see, especially given that Garland is such a cerebral filmmaker.
i feel like im seeing 3.5/5 from cregger stans, who think it doesnt reach the heights of his last ones but is a very fun time
and 4.5/5 from people who werent in on cregger before, appreciating that this one sheds some of his thematic/formal/framing trickery and just goes super sleek, lean and fun
metacritic.com/pictures/every-videogame-movie-ranked-worst-to-best/5
Holy s***, this list has over 50 video game adaptations listed and only 3 have ever managed a positive review score.

Well, it does make some sense given the structure and straightforwardness of this film versus his previous two, with those two (I’m assuming, haven’t not yet seen RE) having deeper, more socially conscious thematic elements and being structurally more experimental.
I could see that leading to a slightly more dismissive attitude because this film (as it should be) is going to feel comparatively more breezy and crowd pleasing given its nature and intent.
And that’s probably gonna be especially more prevalent given that horror is essentially the current filmic zeitgeist that’s being used to highlight and discuss social ills and the like.

Who are you seeing this from that aren’t into Cregger? Because critics have always loved him.

I might fall into the second category.

Legend of Zelda too
Legend of Zelda too
Legend of Zelda I can see just being kind of a bland adventure movie.
Elden Ring will absolutely not be that.
