Really enjoyed this, thought it was really cool that they made him some random guy that leaves a trail behind that the actual main character would find later on.

I liked that too even if mixed on execution. If umbrella was more how they were in the games . As well as overall tone closer to games this would be a smash hit for me

This isn’t like Beau . It’s enjoyable and a journey but comparison to Beau is a bit of a stretch

Even if so just the fact someone felt strongly enough to make that stretch

I imagine the sequel will be more like the games, just hope they get a good director (can’t imagine Cregger signs on again given his comments) and that it isn’t slop like the older movies.

protag death at the end didn’t feel very resident evil, but I get that this is an original take and I respect that

  • Austin Abrams performance was definitely the highlight, I liked the new zombies too, a lot of which reminded me of the last of us, like the rat king and the shamblers

we dont need cregger to come back. if anything get his blessing and shay hatten who helped write this on for sequel. Move on with new director and writer continue anthology style

wish he died or turned when he met umbrella corporation and the briefcase kept exchanging hands each time a character died to represent dying in a video game happens but respawns dont. Forming a layered story more akin to world war z or weapons showing the different perspectives. i dont think we needed austin abrams tone all movie . he did well with what they gave him but his character arc and story stayed past its prime for me especially with no further contact with his lover besides voicemail left in house and him leaving a voicemail but never hearing her voice since earlier. S\*\*\* would have been heartbreaking to see him get a phone at umbrella start talkng to her everything seems good then unexpectedly turn

  • Sep 27

My hot take is that he isnt the protagonist of the movie and in many ways is the antagonist of the movie.

Nah, that sounds convulated and not Resident Evil at all.

You don’t want a RE movie, you want Weapons with an RE aesthetic. This movie is broadly a roller coaster ride with thematic depth that can be dug into if you so choose. It is what it is, and it’s clearly resonating.

It absolutely is not just that. It’s RE to its bones. It takes almost every gameplay caveat of the series and translates it to film, the very structure and progression of the film itself is ripped straight out of RE.

To such a degree that if this was an original movie people would be saying “Why the f*** wasn’t this just a Resident Evil movie?”.

Cregger’s two films literally deal with fractured structures and interpersonal character dramas from multiple perspectives.

This film is like an anti-thesis of that, the f*** you mean.

The cinematography alone is so distinctive as to have clearly been influenced by video game camera placements and environmental/level design.

The idea of anthology within a movie or story has existed before weapons existed . I’m saying and for good reason why a video game lends itself to anthology style or seeing multiple perspectives . There are cutscenes in games where you see perspectives or scenes where your character isn’t present in the scene where you the player are seeing the information that they the player character isn’t . Some of the best games of all time do that

Shadow of colossus does that and again I’ve mentioned it in regards to this

When you show everything from player perspective and it’s a singular player . Never from the world perspective or others experiencing it even for moments they leave the eyesight of the main character that works best for you but not Everyone

He is a selfish human being throughout and not a hero by any means he is someone doing a job for money not out of the goodness of their heart then eventually survival and self preservation.

How many video games including resident evil do we see multiple perspectives utilized or scenes where the main character isn’t even on screen ?

What’s your point? This movie is clearly RE in its bones. It could only be identified with Resident Evil. It’s clearly not Silent Hill. It’s clearly not Dead Space. It’s clearly not Alan Wake. It’s clearly not Dino Crisis.

It’s f***ing RESIDENT EVIL. The film you’re describing has nothing at all to do with RE and sounds like someone who’s is embarrassed at the idea of making a Resident Evil movie trying to make an “elevated” horror picture using some components from Resident Evil.

The premise of the movie was to reconstruct the feeling of playing the classic RE games for the first time ever. Either accept that as the premise of the movie or reject it, but irregardless it needs to be evaluated based on what its intentions and objectives are, otherwise your arguments are not to be taken seriously because you’re not engaging with the movie, you’re just trying to role play being a filmmaker that knows better.

    Unironic LARPer behavior.

    Tonight

  • Second watch this time with some family in imax tonight

  • Low-key, funniest moment in the movie for me is when the little girl is reaching her arms out to get Bryan to pick her up and Bryan is just staring at her and says “Damn.”

Parts of this movie are embarrassed of making a resident evil movie considering it makes everything including umbrella jokes
