great watch, so far. I had to take a break, getting a little too stressed/pissed off watching this. 1.5 episodes in

With this kind of content I’m only devouring one episode a week

Nobody trying to see "struggle s***"...

The misconceptions and early judgments of what they will be have been wrong for the most part tho

Black Twitter and all them lanes would absolutely love Lovers Rock if they had just given it a chance (or it was promoted better idk). Best black joy project in recent memory imo ironically from the dude people expect trauma stories from

There’s the struggle s*** that’s clearly tryna just show off pain for the sake of doing it and there’s there’s having a story with a purpose. Think they both did the latter this time around (not done with Underground Railroad yet tho)

Can’t speak on this yet but Mangrove definitely made me not want to watch any more of McQueens Small Axe anthology

Kinda sick and tired of black art that exists purely to anger the viewer about black struggle and doesn’t wish to explore anything else

Of course people are going to pre-judge. It's already an uphill battle since it takes place during slavery.

A show like Lovecraft Country at least had a sci-fi element to draw in audiences. There's always displays of black joy in "struggle s***" and unfortunately the trailer for this didn't show black joy we haven't seen before.

It's just hard to market a show/film like this nowadays.

Yeah I agree about the promo. Didnt watch the trailer itself but some of the marketing was just eh. But then again weirdly enough I wasn’t convinced to start Lovecountry yet as a fan of Majors

Oh well lol. Can see people picking up over time like a lot of Amazon projects. S*** too good so far

I never finished Lovecraft Country, lol. Pretty sure I'll complete this whenever I decide to pay for a Amazon subscription though.

shame to see Barry Jenkins go down this road. Man jus filming torture, burning, suffering and whippings of black people just to make white people clap and rejoice that they are better now than they used to be.

Lovers Rock was one of the most joyful experiences of my life...

While Beale Street was saddening, the scene of Tish and Fonny embracing each other after they found the house was incredibly euphoric to me. I'm willing to put my faith in Jenkins if no one else.

LITERALLY WATCH THE SECOND MOVIE OF SMALL AXE LMAO ALL YOUR CRITICISMS WILL BE CHALLENGED.

The anthology was also necessary because systemic racism in Britain was never given that level of exposure. Not everything in History has been uncovered

you have such a strange obsession with this "liberal agenda" that clouds your vision and makes you seem like some angry old MAGA guy on facebook. almost every post you make in this section revolves around this paranoid conspiracy and I'm sure you're following some other forum or website that's just as obsessed as you are with these evil liberals ruining the country but it's tiresome here when we're just trying to discuss TV and film

maybe Jenkins has a different goal to adapting this series than appeasing white liberals. pretty insulting you take away the autonomy of these directors to tell stories they're interested in and ascribe it to some conspiratorial agenda

really hard to nail the tone in a series like this, but in the two episodes I've seen, I thought Jenkins portrayed these historically accurate horrors of slavery tactfully without it being exploitative or cheap. he's avoided almost all of the issues I had with Lovecraft Country

Hard to believe Jenkins has as much autonomy as you believe he does when every producer behind this show is a white liberal

Hard to believe Jenkins is being genuine when the only black voice he named as an influence on this work was one of the biggest neoliberal hacks of our time in Jordan Peele.

You say he did it tactfully, but there isn’t anything this show is designed to do besides cause hurt to the viewer and make them angry for the sake of plot advancement. That is the definition of exploitation. I also find it disgusting that this is one of the rare times I have seen a nearly fully dark skinned cast... just for them to be depicted in every frame as being traumatized, tortured, in tears, burned alive, whipped, forced into sex, etc.

I’ll continue to watch the next episode simply because I did find the last 5-10 minutes interesting that Barry seemed to be trying something new here, but so far even the visual style here is too much. The sunlight emboldened around every character feels more often like something that distracts from them to focus on his style rather than something that adds to it. Also the look reminds me more of the History channel rather than a legit film.

We don’t need manipulative drama to “uncover” the “hidden systemic racism” of Britain.

It already disgusts the f*** outta me that we got When they See Us to blatantly lie and make up a ton of details surrounding the Central Park Five case for blatant manipulation and to simply cause anger to the viewer (especially considering the case isn’t that well known). I don’t need to see any more of these exploitative “genuine” dramas to just play for one side of a nuanced situation just to echo modern white liberal talking points.
