Ownership wise yes,there's a reason director's cuts are so rare, cuz without big bosses permission it's a no go

I'm sure the studio/producers still have access to it but this was not their movie in the way it'd be for a more powerful director, who usually would be a part of the film in other ways.

They were hired to just direct it. They didn't write it, develop it, shoot it, fund/produce it, etc.... It wasn't their footage and they knew that judging by the attempt to salvage scenes before they lost access
