Portait of a lady in fire was really weak imo. It felt like such a shallow portrayal of love and I'm kinda completely over seeing lgbt relationships always being portrayed from a sense of trauma that liberals seem to love. I really got nothing from it besides some pretty cinematography.

I do like Eggers but I have yet to be amazed by him. Witch and Lighthouse were solid but I keep feeling like he is missing some elements to really make a great film. Hope he is able to do it with The Northman.

Yorgos Lanthimos (the way his characters interact with each other)

Safdie Bros (grimey anxiety inducing stories filled with closeup shots)

Gaspar Noé (sensory visceral experiences like no other director has ever achieved)

Denis Villeneuve (finding just the right balance between mainstream appeal and making films with layers and substance)

Ari Aster & Robert Eggers (for ushering us into a new era of horror)

Bong Joon-Ho (for making so many people aware of how good Asian cinema can be)

Also people who have been here for a bit longer or have bigger filmographies but still delivered heat this decade

    • Scorsese
    • Tarantino
    • Aronofsky
    • Fincher
    • Takashi Miike
    • Terrence Malick
    • Nicolas Winding Refn
