I believe the point was for it to be a soft boss/tutorial boss in gen 1 and then it just never got good buffs over 20 years afterwards

So the speed was to punish using a bad matchup (Charmander) while still being easy for caught pokemon (nidoran, Mankey, etc). It looks badass but is still trash

Emboar broke the fire type starter trend for me. On initial playthroughs of Pokemon games I would always go Fire type. But the designs of the Tepig line looked too goofy to me. It was a Fire/Fighting type for the third time in a row, and it was slow as f***in s*** with terrible defensive stats. It has an impressive learnset via TMs, and it's clearly meant to be a glass cannon. But to me, what good is a glass cannon if it can get one shot by most Water, Ground, and Psychic types that are faster than it?

Went with Oshawott and gotta say, Samurott kinda underrated as a water starter final evolution.
