I don't know I feel like The Kinks were a little more guitar soloey than the punks ever cared to be. Them went hard on the scuzzy energy but didn't bother with guitar solos or any real show off musicianship like that.

i mean yeah kinda but tons of punk bands still did guitar solos. and its not like dave davies was doing some 2 minute long technical masterclass solo on those songs

yeah calling it proto punk is definitely bullshit but that doesnt mean it cant be jarring and daring for the time

people who call any energetic or rebellious rock music proto punk is one of my pet peeves

Right yeah watching her do that on Saturday Night Live when I was a kid was amazing. Also Lenny Kaye wanked some pretty epic solos considering they were punk heroes.

Nah he would record music highlights from reruns onto VHS for us out in the boonies. I don't think I've ever seen a betamax in real life.

My top 5 would be Kinks - Face to Face, Beach Boys - Pet Sounds, Stones - Aftermath, Beatles - Revolver, Dylan - Blonde on Blonde

It’s tough to be definite because they’re so hard to compare against each other but I do know that if I contrast front to back enjoyment, Dylan would be behind the other 4; maybe ahead of the Stones.

Blonde on Blonde for sure. Pet Sounds is a distant second and that’s a masterpiece. Just goes to show how titanic BoB is, a spawling behemoth of a record
